Page 14: Tooling Around a Local Salvage Operation

Dec. 28, 2003 - Well, I spent part of the day taking pictures of the two parts trucks I brought home yesterday, and the rest out at a local small salvage operation, where there were four '67-'72 Ford pickups, taking some more shots there.

Just to keep you up to date: I bought a '51 Studebaker pickup in bad shape last summer. I was planning on mounting the 'Stude body on a '82 Chevy Silverado CrewCab dually Camper Special chassis. I gave away all the 'Stude running gear, bought the CrewCab and stripped it down to the rolling chassis and was just barely getting started widening out the rear fenders to accommodate the duals...but then got sidetracked with other things. When I found out a couple months ago that I was going to be a daddy again later this coming summer, it was decided it was time to get rid of some of my projects. The 'Stude is making the supreme sacrifice, as well as a '72 Pontiac Luxury Lemans. The Pontiac has been stripped and many parts sold on E-bay so far, with more in the works. I tried to find someone willing to take the 'Stude project off my hands, but got no takers.

This small salvage operation nearby is where I've been taking the carcasses of the trucks (and cars) I've been stripping. It's where I took the CrewCab body after it was removed from the frame. The owner has a full-time job, but dabbles a little on the side with salvage parts, but mainly he accepts junk cars from local residents who simply want to get rid of one. When his stockpile builds up to a point, he has a crusher come out to deal with the rejects. Anyway, when I happened to mention to him about 2 months ago that I was looking to get rid of the 'Stude project, he expressed an interest in the dually chassis, and after doing some talking about it, we decided that I'd try advertising a bit more to sell the 'Stude project, but if I still made no progress, then I'd bring the whole lot out to him, in trade for some Ford truck parts.

After taking pictures today of my latest parts trucks, I decided to head out to his place and see if he was still interested in the dually chassis, since there's been no progress on selling the 'Stude. He was still interested, so I spent some time checking out his parts trucks to see what kind of goodies I'd be willing to swap for. When I first brought this up with him today, he asked me "So what would you want for the dually chassis? A couple of parts trucks?" At first I thought about it, but decided to look around first, mainly because I didn't know if I really wanted more parts trucks right now, and so by the time I left, we'd agreed on the following list:

  • one good Ford 390
  • assorted parts from a '67 F100 - rear styleside bumper w/brackets, hood emblems, hubcaps, heater control cables and knobs
  • one set of original Ford Jr. West Coast mirrors and brackets
  • one complete dealer-installed auxiliary fuel tank setup (from a '70 Camper Special)
  • one complete front disc brake setup from a '75(?) F-100
  • one complete set of 3-point shoulder harnesses from a '78 F-100
  • two '70 F-100 power brake boosters

...plus I made him promise to keep his eyes open for a '78-'79 tilt column for me.

The pictures on this page were shot at his rural lot, mainly just to let me refer back to what he had. I decided to post the pics here just for the hell of it. And before you start sending e-mails, let me tell you that 98% of the sheetmetal on these trucks are rusty, and probably not worth trying to save.

This '70 Camper Special has the dealer-installed auxiliary fuel tank on the driver's side. It has the underbed toolbox with a working door and the factory underdash heater/AC unit. Somebody has already robbed the truck of all the underhood AC components, and I'm assuming the unit is laying on the floor after it was loosened and lowered to retrieve the AC hoses. It was equipped with a 360, power steering and power brakes.

There isn't much left to salvage on this poor truck. A previous owner installed luxury-car velour bucket seats. A falling tree has rendered the cab useless and the rest of the sheetmetal is rusted.

This '71's fuel tank plumbing was something I hadn't seen before. It has a second line which runs down along the right-side frame and into the charcoal canister (?) in the right-front side of the engine compartment. This truck is giving up it's Jr. West Coast-style mirrors. (Notice the junkyard cat!)

I will be getting my hands on this 3-point shoulder harness assembly from a '78 F-100.

This '67 F-100 obviously had a previous owner whose brain wasn't firing on all eight cylinders! Check out his 'customizing' efforts in the pictures below and to the right. The top picture shows a home-made overhead wooden console, mounted against a furry headliner panel. The second picture shows how NOT to install 6x9 speakers in the dash...and you just gotta say WTF when you see his color choices for painting the engine, obviously done with a spray can and his 'custom' padded steering wheel. When the steering column's automatic shifter collar broke, this guy wasn't fazed...he cut a hole in the transmission tunnel (judging from the hole, I'd say he used an AXE!) and ran a steel rod down to the transmission. Anyway, This truck will supply a perfect rear bumper, heater control cables, emblems and other assorted small parts.
