We finally got the bed on it and got it out to my parents house. Now I can work on it there before bringing it on home. I still need to fix the tail lights, mount the bumper, and get tires for it.

I managed to finally talk the guy out of the winch and bumper. I paid way to much for them but since they are proving so difficult to find I'm not to upset about it.

Does anyone know how I can tell what axel is under it. I need to get new hubs but I'm not sure how to tell what axel it is. I'm sure it's a Dana-44 but I don't know if it's a HD or not.

One way to tell is to look at the top of the backside of the front differential. If it says 446F, it's the 44hd. I'm not sure what it should say if its the smaller axle. Another way to tell is to look at the hub. If it has six bolts and says hub lok and is an externally mounted hub, it is the 44hd. If it has three bolts and says hub lok and is an internally mounted hub, it is the standard 44. The Warn number for the 44 hd is 9072. The Warn number for the standard 44 is 20990. Maybe if you posted a closeup photo of your current hubs I could give you a better idea. It is difficult to tell from your current photos.

Your truck has the small hub, light duty 44. An HD front axle truck will say 7700 on the VIN plate and have riveted on rear overload brackets.

The hubs work but on the right side the whole housing spins when you try to lock the hub. You have to hold the housing while you lock the hub. I will look at it again tomorrow to see if I can find anything on the axle. I looked before but I didn't look at the back side of it.

I brought the truck home from my parents last night. It made the trip ok but I do have a couple problems you guys might be able to help me with. The truck can't do more than around 50 mph. This kind of hurts as far as using it as a vacation truck. It has a 4.56 rear. I assume it's just so low geared but is there any way I can do any thing with it to make it more highway friendly?

Also, is there any place around where I could get the transfer case rebuilt? Or how hard is it to do yourself? When we left my parents house I was struggling to get more than around 20 mph with it so I stoped and had my brother look under it to make sure we were not stuck in 4wd. It wasn't but after working the shifter back and forth the truck did alot better. I don't know if it's possible but I think what had happened was that the transfer case was sending power to the rear for 4wd but not to the front. The transfer case seems to work fine, I can get through all the gears and it will go into both 4 lo and 4 hi but it's pretty stiff.

The fluids all look good. I'm sure they could use a changing of the gear oil but they aren't low.


I thought it felt like 4 lo as well but the front drive shaft was not spinning. What do you mean when you say Dana 24's? It has a Dana 44 front and a Dana 60 rear. Are you talking about the transfer case?

Yeah, the t-case should be a dana 24. It might be possible you had the shifter a bit inbetween somehow and got it in low range without have the front drive shift collar locked in yet inside the t-case. Strange.

I've been away for a while now but am thinking about finishing this old truck and finaly getting her back on the road. I need advise though as to wether or not I should.

First, some history. Shortly after getting the truck to my house in Burrton Ks. I started having some severe financial problems and fixing up the old girl had to be put on hold. Just about the time that I was able to work on it again wouldn't you know it, the economy collapses. The aviation industry was hit particularly hard and I lost my job. Shortly after that I lost my home. I always try to look for a silver linning and in this case I was saved by the fact that I had so many years at Cessna that I got a pretty good severance check. I had always wanted to try full timing in a motorhome and felt that since I was now homeless and looking for work that I might as well travel and look for work elsewhere. I bought a 32ft classA coach last April and have been living in it ever since. I am now in Ajo Arizona where I spent the best winter of my life. I love living in a motorhome!

I do need a get around vehicle though. My brother came to Arizona with me and brought his Toyota motorhome with him. We used it as our transportation while here but we sold it a few weeks ago because it just wasn't working out for us. We want to come back here again next winter and the trails around here are so incredible that we were thinking that maybe we could get the old truck done and bring it with us. I have around $3500 in the form of a tax refund that I planned on puttin into something for transportation for us.

Now I have a choice to make. Back at my parents place in Kansas I have my truck, a 1967 Galaxie 500, and a 1982 Fairmont. I could put the money into a new engine, tires, brakes etc for the truck. I could also put t into putting a big six into the Galaxie so that it could get good fuel economy or I could fix up the Fairmont. The Fairmont is my least favorite idea. I love the car but I could use more storage space while on the road and both the Galaxie and the truck would be far more useful. I have also found that the 200ci six in it is not known for being very economical. The Galaxie is an older restoration with a "hot" 390 in it. It was a very fun car but got around 5 to 10 mpg. I know it sounds strange, but I love the 300 six and since they had them in the '67 Custom sedan I know it would not be hard to put one in the Galaxie. Throw in some highway gears and I know I can get good milage out of it.

And then theres the truck. I really want to fix it up but am worried as to wether I can for less than $3500. I have been checking around and t looks like a new engine will be around $1000 to $1500. I will also have to get tires for it and rebuild the transfere case. I know there will be other things that I will need to do but wanted to get opinions as to what I should rebuild or replace. I was finaly able to get the transfer case into 2 hi when I brought it back to my parents. For most of the drive I ws stuck at around 35 mph. Ikept stopping and trying different things with it and it finaly went fully into 2 hi. I was then able to get it on up to 55 with know problem at all. I am not to worried about speed because I generally keep the speed down to around 45 to 50 with the coach anyway in order to save gas.

What do you guys think? Could I "realisticly" fix up the truck for less than $3500? I really want to because it would be great for hauling my dirt bike and other storage.
