How's this setup sound?

Post by moore89 »

Ok I'm getting close to being able to rebuild my 460 that goes in my 67 f100 LWB street truck. I have gone over several diffrent combos from stroker kits to stock rebuilds. I want to know what everyone thinks of this plan? Stock style rebuild using origional rods/ crank with a Sealed Power Powerforged rebuild kit 10.1 compression ratio. All ARP hardware used. A comp Cams K-kit with a magnum roller cam, doubble roller timing set, lifters and lube cam specs at 253/253 deg and .585"/.585" lift with 110deg lobe seperation 3,000-6,000 RPM range. I have a B&M hole shot 2600 converter and 4.11 gears in the rear 9" axle. MSD-6 Ignition. Dual 3" exhaust off of L&L headers. The heads will be my stock D3VE's with some port and polish work.
67 f100 2wd LWB (go fast truck). 460/C6 lots of lope and gobs of torque (under construction again) 13.06 in the 1/4mi (with the old less built motor).

Well, sounds pretty good. I bet you'll need some pretty good gas to run it though, with the 10:1... MK

10:1, don't you just barely have to run more than 87?

Sounds like a really decent rebuild. A stock-style rebuild is the good budget way to rebuild a motor, maybe bump the compression a little too like you are doing. ARP hardwear should be a really good decision, but the hardware is only as good as the tightening sequence you give it. You didn't mention the intake but I am assuming a mild aluminum dual-plane intake? Make sure the cam is really what you want, and that it matches up well with your setup is all i have to say about that. I have considered porting my d3s, but that costs so much money to have some professional do it the right way, so that will be way farther along the line. there is a flow chart of many different stock/ported/aftermarket 429/460 heads floating around on the net somewhere, you can search for it. MSD-6 ignition does that mean you are getting a MSD distributor also? [it better lol] L&L Headers are damn nice looking but i don't think the price premium is worth it over the Heddmans. I have a set of the heddmans for the 460, but they will not fit in my truck they are made for a 73-79 2wd 460, but through everything i just couldn't get them to fit. I think its because i have a bendix box for my powersteering. Because of this, I am going to get Sanderson street rod headers, basically blockhuggers. Your setup sounds good. goodluck with it finantially wise if you aren't putting the motor together yourself. Do you have MSN messenger?

Well, I guess it would depend on the tuning...You might be able to tune one down to run on 87, but judging from my past older cars that were high compression, I'd say he'll need premium to run it like it should be run... Heck, even my old plain jane 229 V6 monte carlo required mid grade to not ping, if I was on the highway, or in mountain areas, if the timing was kept as normal. I prefered the spend the extra for more octane, than detune for regular...Ran much better. In the flat city, I could run regular, as I never stressed the engine much. MK

.060 over, offset grind the crank, use 240 rods and you have a 518. You and the engine will be a lot happier if you don't go over 9.5 to 1. Unless it will just be a weekend warrior and you don't mind the thought of high test or maybe even octane booster (depending on the cam) You might get away with 10 to 1 if you keep the lobe seperation on the cam down. Definately call the cam manufacturer tech line before buying one so you will have something you can live with.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention the carb and intake manafold combo I want to run my Weiand Stealth High rise dual plane with my holley 750 Street avenger carb. I really like the Idea of the 518 stroker but can the block be safely taken 60 overbore and driven daily? and with fuel octaines i usually run 91 anyway which is the highest here besides blue fuel. But now I am concidering going 9.5:1 cr. Do you think that that 518 If built right could handle a 150 shot of happy juice to surprise those pesky weed wacker cars?

The block should be easily capable of .060 but sonic testing should be done just to make sure. I have read that a good 460 block with no core shift can be safely bored .125 but others say not over .060. The article I read years ago in Hotrod about the offset grind actuall built theirs with the .125 overbore if I remember right. It ended up a 532. With the stock iron crank abd 2 bolt block thry figured was still safe at 500 horse but not high rpms. Keep it down under 5500 for the troque and horsepower peaks.
With the offset grind you will probably need custom made pistons. With the long 240 rods it has good connecting rod angles for gobs of torque without having to twist it up.

should handle a 150 shot as long as you have forged pistons.
