axel removal

Post by fonfixer »

I need to replace driver side brake backing plate, need to remove axel to do that. How does it come out? Anything holding it in? Searched through the forum and came across some scary stuff about pinion gears and backlash, don't want any of that. I watched my dad remove axel on 64 1 1/2 ton flatbed by removing tire and putting heavy chain on one of the lug bolts and popping the chain like a whip. Don't remember if he did anything else, been almost 30 years ago.

Assuming you're working on a Ford 9" rear axle housing, you unbolt the 4 bolts found on the axle tube flange that retains the axle. If you have a slide hammer, use it, if not, flip a brake drum around, loosely bolt it to the axle and give it a few good pulls (slide hammer like) and you should be able to pull your axles out.

Fist we need to know what kind of truck it is on. F100 or F250/350?

Thanks Forest, worked like a charm. First time pulling an axel. Pulled the one at the junkyard first, rather learn there then on my truck. Found there is nothing to it. All that trouble because of trying to do brakes.
