Get the book from Eastwoods on refinishing trim. I haven't tried it but the guys who have say they can't ever get rid of all the blackish stuff from buffing and it will have a blackish look in certtain light. I repaired a dented headlight door once and just used rattlecan clear coat over the buffed out repair but it turns kind of foggy when it dries.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

You might check with BMP Design www.bmpd.com (I think) they are a BMW supplier, but did have a kit for the alum trim on BMW's that I've heard great things about.
