Am I doing this right? c4 re-install...

Post by Oxblood »

I chewed up a ring gear on my 70 f100 (302/c4) during my cross country NC-CO dash last summer and am finally getting around to fixing it. I read online that the torque converter seats down 2 "clicks", so I slid it on until it seated and gentle twisted it until it could go no further and felt what i am assuming was the two clicks and could get no further movement out of it. My problem is when trying to mate the trans to the engine it comes within 3/8 or so of an inch and I cannot get it to come any further forward. The bolts to the engine will engage and i could pull it with those but I don't want to damage anything. The little alignment dowels are lined up but I just can't get the last little bit and am very frustrated. I've pulled it down and recheck the torque converter 3 times and am about at my whits end.

With the trans out, lay a straight edge across the bellhousing and measure the distance from the straight edge to the bottom of the studs on the torque converter. Then measure the distance from the converter stud holes on the flywheel to the mating surface of the engine block and compare measurements. Sounds like you do not have the converter fully seated in the pump.
Grab the center hub of the converter and one of the mounting studs, while wiggling up and down on the center hub, spin the converter around and back and forth with the mounting stud.

I'll drop it down again and take some measurements. I did what you described to seat it but I may not be on far enough. On a related note I think what cause all this trouble is I lost the inspection pate on my trans somewhere across the country, is this what I need to replace it? http://tinyurl.com/3x3u6do

Not sure if that's the correct cover. Ask the seller to measure the span between the bolt holes and compare it to your plate.

what i do is put my open hand on the converter and put a little pressure pushing in while spinning it with the same hand. :2cents:

I think I got it! I was able to move the trans back far enough to reseat the torque conveter and when I brought it back forwardthe bellhousing sat against the block and the converter bolts seemed to be further back in the trans. I torques then to 30 ft lbs per a spec I found online but don't know what th crank the trans mounting bolts down to.

Thanks! Sorry bout all the typos, my laptop died and I'm doing all my surfing off my iPod. Hopefully I'll have this heap running tomorrow when i get the new trans mount in. On a side not muscling this trans around underneath the truck I accidentally pulled the yoke out of the rear of the trans. Can I just stick it back in or does it gO a certain way?

Yeah I'm assuming I have the right term. The shaft coming from the rear of the trans slid right out.I'll look at it closer tomorrow to see if I'm missing something.

Pics would be very helpful. The "shaft" shouldn't just slide out. Do you have a slip type yoke or a bolt on yoke? How does your driveshaft attach to the trans?

it sounds like he may have a slip yoke on his driveshaft.

My 79 dent had the same C-4 tranny. It should be splined with one tooth that is slightly bigger than the others, and only go back in one way, (slowly turn it around on the splines while pushing in).

Seemed like I also remembered three distinct clicks when mating the convertor to the tranny? :hmm:

Yep slides right off and will go back on in any orientation. No nuts or anything to hold it in. Everything seems to be working although it sounds like my starter may be dragging, i hope it's not my new flexplate. It's a good feeling to start up after 4 months of sitting. If everything looks good all that's left is to hook the driveshaft back up. Thanks for everyone's help!
