For some reason my 74 f250 wont go into 4 wheel drive. I locked in the hubs, put the standard stick in neutral, put the small stick in 4H, put the standard stick back into 1st, pulled out and only the back tires spin!?!? does the same in 4L. what am i missing or doing wrong? need help soon please!

Re: putting into 4X4
There are several possibilities. Before I started to tear things apart, I would get the truck on a wet/slippery surface and with the truck in 4 high, spin the tires a bit. Don't do a full burn out or anything, just enough gas to break traction some. Have a friend watch the front tires and see if they break loose. If they don't break loose, jack up the front end with the tranny in gear and the transfer case in 4 high or 4 low. spin the front tires by hand. Watch the driveshaft. If the driveshaft turns, then your front differential is OK likely and you likely have a transfer case issue. If the driveshaft does not turn then the problem would be in the front end.

it may even be a lock out that is sticky and wont engage the axle.

Or your stock ford lockouts are broken. I know the tabs on my right front factory ford lockout that you turn broke off so I have no 4wd now. Just another option

Re: putting into 4X4
Yeah I had problems with my factory hubs the right side wasnt working. What I used to do to check was in the drive way id lock the hubs get underneath and spin the front driveline. if the hubs lock correctly the driveshaft will obviously not spin. if the hub or hubs dont lock right then you will be able to spin the driveline by hand. once you try that then you can go on and figure if your problem is fron the driveline forward or driveline back.just more information from another 4x4 f250 owner.
