Re: Which is better?
I've had both. The 302 is a good gas mileage motor and the 360 is a good workhorse motor. Just depends on what you want to do with the truck. I can say I have beat my 302 and it is still running strong.

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

Re: Which is better?
+1, it all depends in what you want to do with the motor. The 302 does have better aftermarket support, but the 360 is bigger.
Locate approximately as shown.

Re: Which is better?
360 is a better engine for hauling and towing imo. A 302 just doesn't seem torquey enough

Re: Which is better?
The power band on a 302 is in the higher rpms, on a 360 the power band is at lower rpm...
So to pull with the same power, the 302 would have to work a lot harder than the 360.
I have 330FT in my bus and it has even a lower end than a 360...

Re: Which is better?
If you're gonna use it like a truck then the 360 is your best bet. I'd go 360 if i had to choose.

Re: Which is better?
I'm running the 360 and I just tore it down for the rebuild about two years ago. It lasted through being a daily driver, a weekend romper and the occasional drag racer (had it in high school). Never had a single problem with her and the only reason I tore it apart was to bore it, beef up the heads and a couple other things that should make it a little more fun to run. Do the 360 she's never let me down!!

Re: Which is better?
Then stick with it. If you switch to a 302, then you have to swap transmissions or bell housing/ clutch too. If it's an auto you'll have to change the drive line length as well due to tail shafts being different lengths. 360's are work horses like 300 6's. Low rpm engines. The 390 is also a workhorse with more performance possibilities.

302's okay for a cruiser, but the 360's the worker. Of course that's my , whenever you ask the 'which is better' question about anything you're going to get a lot of opinions.
