A/C - Metal Fragments in my System

Post by Jon »

 It finally happened. My A/C unit just imploded. I read about this happening to Ford vehicles of my model year ('95 F150) a few years ago in the book "Lemon-Aid" and also in "Consumer Reports" and my hopes of dodging the bullet on this one have gone up in smoke. I'd like to completely remove the A/C components from my 5.0 L (I'm going to go with a 360 A/C - 3 windows open at 60 miles an hour) and I've heard that I need to get a belt tensioner to take the place of the A/C unit. Any advice/tips/tricks on doing this would be really appreciated. :help:

you all ready have a belt tensioner on that engine. what you have to do if you want to remove the compressor is to put the belt on. but not on the compressor. hold the tensioner up out of the way. or take it off. anyway put the belt on every pulley except the pulley you are getting rid of. then take up the slack and mark the belt where the slack meets together. take the belt off. measure what lenght you need except the left over slack. then go get a belt as long as the measurement you took.

They make an a/c bypass pulley to bolt down in the place of you compressor so you dont need to route your belt all crazy. It will bolt down on the 4 mounting holes you compressor had bolted to. It might come with shorter bolts, if not you will need them. I think you can use your stock belt to. Just check if you go that way in removing your a/c.

Thanks guys. I went to my local Ford dealer and they do have a replacement bracket and belt pulley to take the place of my A/C compressor. They said this setup is designed so I can keep my current belt.
