Magnaflow Muffler Question

Post by AK F100 »

With all this talk of mufflers and exhaust, I am itchn' to buy some parts for the truck and have thought about picking up a set of mufflers. My question is how does he shape (round or oval) and size (diameter of case and length) of the muffler effect the sound, and also how does placement of the muffler come into play. I was looking at the Magnaflow 4" case with 2-1/2" inlet/outlet and was not too sure how length changed the sound. I see they make them in 14" and 18". In my mind I see it as, the larger the muffler, the quieter the sound. Any thoughts anyone. :hmm:

So I did some research and answered two of the three questions.

Shape - Means nothing, only for fitment purposes.

Size - The larger diameter and longer in length the muffler is, the quieter it will be.

Placement - This one I am going to talk to Magnaflow tomorrow about.

my thoughts are the longer the tail pipe from the muffler the more echo it will sound.

I rode with a guy who restored an old Chevelle (I know, I know) with a healthy 396. He had dual exhaust of course. The thing that really surprised me was how quiet it was inside. It had very good sounding exhaust, especially when getting on it and it was pretty loud outside the car. I asked him about it and he told me that he installed the mufflers pretty far back to keep the noise outside. When we stopped I took a look and the mufflers were installed about as far back as you could get them.

Anyway, that made sense to me. The junk that's on my truck right now is a couple of old turbo mufflers that I scrounged up when I put the 302 in. They aren't that loud outside, even when you rev it up, but in the cab it's almost unbearable with the rumbling and resonance. They are mounted where they end right under the cab, and I'm sure that's why it's so noisy inside.

Can't wait to get my 460 installed with a good exhaust system. Gonna mount my new mufflers as far back as I can.

302/auto couldn't go wrong for $500

I ran a set of the 14" Magnaflow mufflers with 2 1/2" pipes on my 63 Uni/390. I had the mufflers mounted just past the trans and ran the tailpipes all the way out the back, right near the license plate. Best sounding exhaust I've ever had on that truck.

Bobby - Those are the ones I am thinking of getting. My tailpipes will be routed a little differently, but very close to the same setup. I am now trying to decide between the 14" and 18"

The 14's sounded sweet on mine. Not too loud, though, just a nice throaty rumble. I also ran an "H" pipe.

Here's my :2cents: . Check out www.grabthepower.com. A previous thread mentioned that IMCO Exhaust was now building exact duplicates of either Flowmaster or Magnaflow mufflers due to the expiration of a patent. I'm not vouching for the poster's claim about the status of any patents but IMCO is another manufacturer to consider for exhaust systems, and you won't pay the premium price for a brand name. :woohoo:

The main difference between IMCO and Magnaflow is that the IMCO's are baffled and Magnaflow's are a straight-thru design. I haven't heard anything performance-wise about the IMCO's.
