69 stepside update 03-08 (warning: big pictures)

Post by killakobra »

hey guys, been lurking the site for awhile since i haven't done a whole lot with my truck until lately. finally got a job and now i have working capital. any who.bought a rag joint for it since the old one was hitting the safety pins and when i checked underneath i found that the driver's side cab mount has collapsed and is putting strain on the steering column. I've pulled all of the front sheet metal and started to focus more on the engine and get it working properly. i also scrapped the stock floor mat and found a lot of cancer and a few holes but they are into the door pillars so I'm not too worried. I'll patch them and por15 the floor. other than that it's been a lot of misc. body work and dis assembly.

here is the rear passenger fender that i've patched and beat out. i've also cut 3 inches off the bottom after lowering the bed to solve some rust issues. i'll renforce it later.

Image

this shows how i lowered the bed. i took the mounting tabs and bolted them to the bottom of the frame rail instead of the top and i'll make a support to go across the front after i notch the sheet metal.
Image

Image

here's a shot of the mighty 300. for some reason i find it better looking than a v8. may be because it's cleaner and simple. i've got a new MSG coil that i'm going to install, along with a valve cover gasket, new lifters, and a new choke cable. i'll spray the parts when i have it dismantled.

Image

and finally a shot of the inner fender well. i was recently given a set of 15X12 wheels with tires and i'm kinda worried about whether or not they will fit on the back. i'm not worried about cutting out an arch in the bed since the bed will be 6-8 inches higher than normal. i may pick them up today on the way to a party. i'll get pictures ASAP. by the way, i'm only going to run them on the back. i'll run the stock steelies on the front for now.

Image

that's about it for now since i lost my camera card and can only take 6 pictures.
have a happy halloween!

alright, i finally got some pictures of the new wheels. i havn't looked to see what brand they are but the dimensions are 15x10 not 15x12 like i originally thought.

Image

the tires that are on it right now are 285/60R16's which are 12"

Image

Image

and one last one from the side.

Image

i also purchased a set of shocks for the front so it won't bounce so much X_X.

i might be able to find a pair of 15x7's if i tried but i'm on a fairly tight budget so i'll just throw the other two on the front and deal with getting new tires as i go. if you're interested i'll try to look for a brand name on them.

The wheels look like Ultra's. Could be American Racing also.

thanks guys. finally found my camera card in my laptop bag so i'll be snapping some more pictures when it's light out tomorrow. got the wide tires on the front along with some new shocks. i'm hoping to get a new radiator this week so i can crank it up. it's been sitting a little too long for my taste. does anyone know if there is a core charge on radiators?

I've never seen a core charge on a radiator before...I've always bought new so I guess there could be one on a reman radiator? Does anyone even offer a reman radiator? :hmm:

hey guys

got some more pictures of misc. things around the truck.

a back view of the truck sitting in the driveway. thankfully my parents don't mind as long as i keep the parts contained.

Image

here's a front view with half the hood on. i'm converting it to a folding hood. it also shows how i want to break up the colors on the truck.

Image

new shocks.

Image

msd coil

Image

freshly painted air cleaner cover.

Image

overview of the front without the innerfenders on. you can see the state truck yellow poking through on the firewall.

Image

and now for the bad new. found a collapsed cab mount. it's good though because now i know why my shifter is so stiff.

Image

small hole in the floor board.

Image

inside the cab

Image

hood halves

Image

through a bump's eyes (and what ford came up with 30 years after bumps.)

Image

i think i'll stop here for now. i have more photos but i'm sure it will take everyone awhile to digest this batch.

My, thats a rough cab mount you got there! Maybe you can convince pops to give you a spot in the garage over the winter to work on her out of the elements and take care of those mounts. The folding hood is a cool idea! I'll be watching to see how it goes.

the garage is full of tools. i'm not too worried about keeping it out of the weather at this point since more of the stripped metal is inside(grill, rear fender ect.). i'll try to keep the hood's progress updated but right now i'm trying to figure out how to mount it. i probably won't even get to that for awhile since the front end is disasembled.
