CO684X4'S 68 4x4 shortbed project (updated 7-01-10)

Post by CO684X4 »

Well here I go. I've finally taken the plunge and I am going to kinda restore the 68 4x4. Its not going to be the all out OE correct restore. Just fix the issues it has and paint it. It was originally Ragoon red may stay that color or go a different route. Haven't decided yet. Here are some thing I will be doing. Replacing the inner fenders, outer fenders, core support and replacing the bed sides. I will pull the drivetrain and fix the leaks. Get the frame painted and such. This is an original Colorado truck so there isn't much rust. The cab is 100% rust free. This will be a slow project. I am in no big hurry. I will post updates as soon as I can. Any comments and ideas are welcome. Here is the link to all photos that will be taken of the truck. Right now there are the before pics.

I have already picked up some parts from my local junk yard, Rust free inner fenders paid 10 bucks for the set. Picked up a rust free core support for 20 bucks and a set of rust free outer fenders.

wonder if those are factory or dealer or after market steps on that bed. i think we have discussed them before on another members' truck.

Joe,

Must be something in the water here because I too am getting my project underway. (Going to start my own thread)

I almost called you on Friday to see if you had time on Saturday to hit the junkyard but it looks like you were busy!

I can tell everyone here that I have seen his truck in person and it is in awesome shape.

Can't wait to watch the progress. Give me a call if you need a hand.

Well I finaly got the bed off today. This is going to be my biggest project on the truck. The only rust this truck has is in the bed. The upper section of the bedsides is where all the rust is. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or do I need to replace both sides of the bedsides? Is it just me or is the crossmember bent? Here are some pics from todays progress.

Well after work today I pulled the cab off the frame and it is now sitting on my homemade doly. It was kind of a pain to do with two people but got it done with no damage. Here are a few pics. More pics in my flickr website. Here are some shots of my floorpan, inside the cab, underneith the cab and with the cab off the frame. Now the real work can begin.
