Repair or replace radiator ?

Post by Generalee0527 »

So I'm getting closer to making my ranger road ready and when I parked it a loooong time ago, I had the radiator core reworked. When I pulled the engine to swap I noticed the top tank had a 3/4" Crack. My question is would it be possible to braze it together or should I just replace it? I've never done any brazing, but I have used a map torch and sweated copper pipe so I'm not afraid to try. I just know they hardly make brass tanks anymore.

I recently had a small tank hole repaired on my 84 diesel, ( brass & copper rad ). I could have done it myself, but I got lazy, they also cleaned it and pressure tested it afterwards, but rad shops that still do this are getting scarce.
I would not braze it, too much heat will melt the surrounding solder, but before soldering it, you need it to be very very clean. Glycol leaves a residue which solder will not stick to.
If the crack is right in the seam, where the tank meets the core, that will be a much bigger job, that happened to my Buick, many years ago. It was a poor job from a previous core repair, and the seam finally just let go. In that case, they had to remove the tank and clean off all the old solder, before re-doing it. That cost a bit more, but still cheaper than a new rad, and it has held up for over 10 years now.
