Roofing Tar for under coating

Post by daveford72 »

This is a truck I bought. It had under coating everywhere. If you do this make sure water, salt, calcium ect does not get between the coating and metal or this will happen:

I did my cab floor in roofing tar and it's been pretty good to me. No signs of delamination or rust. Messy stuff to seal with though.

That's bad , but I've had worse. :D
At least the doors and fenders line up . (until you start driving it and it settles .)

A cheap and easy fix for when your hood hinges fall through the inner fenders , is to get some older Jeep hood hinges ,
and weld or bolt them to the cowl and hood.

And you'll want to add some gussets under the front cab mounts
to keep it from pushing up on the steering column. :2cents:

Roof cement makes a good seam sealer when you have seams that aren't too clean ,
in the underbody area.

What daveford might have is some old dealer undercoat, that stuff could get hard and crack then it'll hold moisture.

My wheel wells are well sealed with roofing tar. It’s a lifesaver.
I use Blackjack. It’s gotta be petroleum based.

The truck has a 300-6 Automatic manual steering. Bearings are bad runs good just rattles real bad. trans seems to only shift once. I have an 1987 150 with a 302 auto I was thinking of installing in it. I want to fix the rust, but try to keep the patina look. The P.O. said the he was having trouble with it shifting. He drove it with the engine noise. The garage he took it to for the shift problem told him the engine was bad, so he parked it. :(

That's exactly what someone did on my '70 4wd project truck
