what are these called?

Post by madtom »

Finally got started on my 72 f250 body swap.

What are the brackets in the attached picture and do they do anything (other than contribute to a substantial amount of rust around their base)?
I'm not doing a restoration by any means, but am going to paint the frame and make any obvious repairs as I go, while the body is off.
Would it hurt anything to just remove these four brackets?

They prevent leaf spring over travel under certain conditions, at least that is what I always believed. Not sure if it was an over engineered part or if it is something that is utilized from time to time that we just don't see or recognize when we are driving.

That one leaf that's not part of the pack is an optional overload spring , the brackets are for that .

That way you can have a mild spring for light loads and more spring for heavy loads.

Ford used to promote those overload springs in advertisements claiming a smoother ride unloaded while still being able to handle the heavy loads.

If they're supposed to make a smoother ride, I don't think mine are working, lol.

With a ton of stones in the back mine touch, with 3 tons they work really well.

If you don't think they work well you should go drive a bump side F-750 with 15 leaks stacked up per side.
