Trans fluid

I have a 71 F100 camper special with a 390, power steering and air. I know originally this truck ran Type F just like my mustang, but when my dad rebuilt the truck he had the trans re built and a shift kit installed in the mid 90s. I'm not sure if these newer clutches and shift kit still will run Type F or will it now be Mercon? and he cant remember what he was told to put in it. I know I had the trans re built in the mustang back in 2006 and I still run Type F in it. I do not want to ruin the trans. Just not sure.

Type F won't hurt it.
You don't want to put Dexron / Mercon in a tranny made for type F

You should see how many different fluids that are made for specific tranmissions these days.

From what I read, if it was rebuilt in the last decade you're green lighted to use Dextron/Mercon. All the rebuild kits are compatible with it. If it's never been apart, keep using Type F.

Mine appeared to have never been removed so when I did a fluid/filter/pan gasket, I went back with Type F. It performs well.

Dextron/Mercon has friction modifiers that Type F does not have, so clutch material that is not designed for Type F will get damaged if used with Dex/Merc.

Thanks for the info. I just spoke with my dad and he remembered that the guy who built the trans told him Type F.

Try putting B and M trick shift in your GM vehicle....Hint hint It is Type F fluid

My C6 was built 6 years ago and runs Type f trans fluid

If you are unsure what type fluid to use just go with a synthetic like Amsoil or there are a couple of good synthetics out there. The synthetics are compatible with all auto trans. Your trans will last longer and run cooler.

Cost a little more but your trans won't wear and you get 100,000 miles between changes, no baloney! Try it out.

Had my 1969 c6 rebuilt about a year ago and they said type f.

It changes gears good and I have not problems.
