Married NP205 question

I'm getting ready to pull the transmission and transfer case out of my 78 F250 donor truck. I've never removed a married transfer case so was wondering where to sperate the two. Do I seperate the adapter at the transfer case, or seperate it from the transmission? Thanks in advance.

From front to back you'll have bellhousing-transmission main case-transmission extension housing-transfercase. The transfercase unbolts with 6 bolts from the transmission extension housing. The extension housing is part of the transmission. GM really liked to stack funky adapters up behind thier trannies and not give a very defined seperation point. Dodge used a cast iron figure 8 to 6 bolt round adapter on all thier 205 applications, kinda wierd, but atleast they're all the same. GM 4x4 transmissions and adapters could fill an encyclopedia.

Thanks for the info and the proper nomenclature. I was assuming that the right seperation poit was the transfer case/transmission extension housing, but wasn't positive. You know what they say about assuming... :hmm:

Do I just remove the 6 bolts from the transfer case and transmission extension housing, or is there something internal at the extension housing that I have to do?

My plan is to do it in 3 pieces, first install the trans, then the extension housing and then the T/C last. I remember reading in the one post about someone having difficulty installin the trans with the extension housing attached.

I pulled the T-case off at the trans so I got the extension and T-case at once when I removed it but will put it back in pieces (just slides on the spline inside) seal will hold it alittle but is heavy so comes apart pretty easy... (drain what you can or will be a mess, my 205 is stlll leakin in an oil pan)


long extension on the below but switchin to the short one.. hard to find a C6 with the long output shaft (18")
