Radiator Support

Post by olivof »

I am new to this forum and will have many questons on the truck I am restoring. It is a 1970 F100 short Fside, 4x4, 302, 4speed, dana 30 and 9" rear.
This will be a frame off resto. back to factory with a few exceptions that I will explain at a later date.
My current question is, what is the difference in a 2wd & a 4wd radiator support. I can buy new one's for the 2wd but none are listed for the 4x4. Can anyone help.
Thanks,
Fred...

On a 2wd the radiator mounts to the radiator support I think. On a 4X4 there are tabs/wings spot welded to the support that the radiator mounts to. I need to replace the radiator support in my highboy as well, I'm probably going to remove the tab/wings and weld them to a 2wd radiator support. However I believe that your radiator should facilitate mounting to the 2wd radiator support without doing this. My radiator has mounting holes on both the front and back so that it could be mounted to either support.

I think but am not positive that you can slide radiator in from the top and line up either set of holes :2cents:
If I am right let me know

Thanks a lot men, Your info. answered my question well. I noticed the engine, trans. are offset to curbside about 3 inches. That would affect the location of engine to radiator. I will go with the new support for the 2wd and use the correct radiator and shroud for the 302.
I also have another question concerning installing the 302 in place of the 6 cyl. but that will be for another posting.
Thanks again,
Fred...

yes you can just remove the wings from the 4wd coresupport and put them on a 2wd coresupport. that is what i was doing until i misplaced my 4wd radiator straps. i ended up putting a 2wd radiator in my truck instead of the 4wd wings and radiator. i also had the 2wd fan spacer too.

yes and no. i buy trucks for parts fo rmy trucks. i then have left over parts that i sell. i dont part out trucks as a living. but i do sometimes get parts i dont have for those who need them. other times i dont get the parts because it isnt worth the hassle if i cant get the parts easily. i did check otu those fuel doors for you. a few days ago. the truck i planned on cutting them off of the rear door was messed up. it has been the only good day weather wise around here. i havent been back to the junkyard since then.

supports are differnet , you can take off the extensions and reweld on your 2 wheel drive,, also if you go to I believe Advance Auto website you can check out the different radiators available so you do not have to slide that radiator inside but still mount it the right way ++ last one we got was still the radiator with brass tank instead of the plastic tank ones out there and came with hose adapters to reduce the radiator hoses it was a rubber sleeve that can be installed inside of it
