one other thing, on a 72 390 i dunno if vacuum advance for the distributor should be on the left side of the edelbrock performer carb (no vacuum at idle) or on the right side (full vacuum at idle). that answer would be great also. in addition, the vacuum port at the back of the carb for power brakes is not plugged, how much of this problem is caused by that? and thirdly, the pcv port on the front of the carb is not used, i have it hooked to the carb spacer, should i plug it, or should i remove the spacer (seeing as i have the adapter plate) and hook up to the front of the carb? Thanks for your help

The port on the left side (if you are sitting in the drivers seat) in for the distributor, the one on the right you will need to plug. Port in the back is for the brakes and makes sure the big one in the front goes to your PCV. Mine did almost the same thing until I hooked up the PCV and make sure all the rubber holes have a tight fit on the ports. There is also a video on you tube for the performer carbs that can help you out. Hope this helps.

YOu'd be better off rebuilding the 2V carb. 4V carbs on 2V manifolds are not power makers and are certainly not as efficient as a 2V on a 2V manifold or a 4V on a 4V manifold.

well, mr. toast, you hit the spot. got the unneeded vacuum lines plugged, hooked the vacuum advance to the left from the driver's seat, hooked up the pcv to the front and plugged the old port on the spacer, and she runs like a CHAMP. And sideoilerfe, you might be right about matching carb and manifold, but for the time being, it feels like i got a whole new engine. throttle response is incredible, idles like a song, when the secondaries open up it feels like a jet engine just kicked in. and for a total price of about 60 bucks because the carb was free. i couldn't be happier. the only thing is that in one little spot in the rpm band (sounds like about 2000) it hits a little spot where it bogs down, and i'f i'm going slow enough, it sputters a litle, and will backfire if i mash the pedal from that spot. any ideas what that might be?

Adjust your timing, mine was doing the same thing. I put a 600 edelbrock w/ electric choke on my 2 brl intake and your right it ran like a new motor was under the hood. It even shifted soo good(c4 auto) I had to listen for it to shift. I even got better gas milage if you want to call it good 10 mpg with old 11.7 with the edelbrock.

will check the timing, thanks for the tip. honestly, this is the first vehicle i've done all the maintenance on (sad, i know) so could you point to a good reference with the specs/procedure for timing this old beast? Thank you for all your help, sir. Oh, by the way, i got the c6 auto, and she shifts like a dream now, also. and when i got her floored, even third will throw you in the seat. heh. i'm the happiest man on the planet right now. like i said, this is my first revival of an old beast, and it's very satisfying. now i just gotta figger out how to get a *&%^load of money so my wife won't kill 'cause i spend it all on the truck

This is the only manual I know of for our trucks:
http://www.amazon.com/Pick-ups-1965-86- ... 788&sr=1-1

It's pretty basic, and doesn't go into great detail, but it's better than nothing.

Keep an eye out on Ebay. There is a 4 volume set for our trucks that occasionally show up as a set or in pieces. I picked mine up in great condition for a steal a few years ago.

wouldn't a haynes work too. it would still have information on the engine and transmission we can use. it might be for 73 and up but they still used the same things as a 67-72 model.
