Air Cleaner Snorkel

Hello,

I recently inherited a 1970 F 250 with about 533,000 miles on it. It was my father truck since 1970
and he recently gave it to me. Overall it's not in bad shape, lots of litle things to fix. I'm really not
planning on doing many mods to the 360 engine, i just want it to run better. It's missing the snorkel
for the original air cleaner, including the exhaust shield and riser hose. Do I need to get these items
back on the engine? I'm thinking of at least putting a fresh air duct on the air cleaner, may be two,
to get some cool air into the engine. The engine is all stock but will be getting an accel points eliminator
installed with a hotter coil and some new wires, plugs and a low mile re-built (by me) stock carb.

I consider them optional. My 68 with the 300 has a GM air cleaner housing..
The original was one of those oil filled jobs, and it was missing some parts.
So I slapped a air cleaner from an old Pontiac V6 on it. It has a snorkle, but
I don't connect it to anything. Just grabs air from under the hood.
My 74 with the 240 has all that original stuff with the duct, etc.

Do I need to get these items back on the engine?

The snorkel connection going to the exhaust manifold is so that on COLD mornings it will warm up faster and idle smooth quicker. If you live where it is NEVER cold you do not need it.

Ahhhh memories, I had a 54 ford with a 289 and a 750 CFM Holley with NO CHOKE. That was fun to start on cold mornings. I would have to keep pumping the Accelerator pump for a few minutes before it would even idle.

Hmmm... I guess it depends on where you live... Mine didn't have it, but once I put them on life became MUCH better.... starting the truck a ZERO degrees and keeping it running is a whole lot harder without them.

Also, they will help with carb icing... I never had that problem until I moved to BF PA, and once I put the riser and snorkel on I haven't had the problem since...

The truck's been in Arizona until I got it this spring. I'm in Ohio so I guess it's
time to find a snorkel and all the pieces I need to make it work.

yeah it is optional depending on where you live. When i first rebuilt my 67's motor i put a open air filter on it, and MAN that thing sucked to drive when it was cold i had to set and fast idle it with my foot to keep it running. Now with all the factory stuff back on it starts right up at 20 degrees with out even using the choke and i only have to idle for 30 sec before i can just take off and go
