EFI Bump
The Trans on the tow beast crapped out on me. Was gonna put a rebuild kit on it and keep motoring with the 427. (9 miles to the gallon)
I had always wanted to put a modern straight 6 with fuel injection in it but never found the time. My brother had a service truck that he hadn't used in 3 years and it had a fresh motor and trans, (16Kon the motor and 5 K on the trans.) 1986 f-150. EFI 302 and tfv-iv ignition and a c-6 behind it.
He volunteered this truck as an organ transplant donor. I happily accepted.
The 302 is now prepped and sitting on jackstands. The (revised) wiring harness is now complete and Im waiting on the 302 perches to show up in the mail.
I hope to get 20 mpg. I will be happy with 15 or 16. Should be a fair truck. My only regret is that it wont be as powerful as the 427. This truck could pull down a small building before it puked.

Re: EFI Bump
Possible, Ill be freshing it up after I get the 302 in my truck. It has new rods and mains, the cylinders look great and it has electronic aftermarket ignition, a friend / well an employee asked the same question. He has an extended cab 83. He said he wants it but he never finishes any of his projects. I told him that he could have it if his truck was ready for it by the time I got it done. If not I will put it up here and maybe e-bay if it doesn't sell here.

Re: EFI Bump
I converted my 69's 360 to an EFI sraight six. The conversion wasn't bad, but If I started it all over again I'd go carb. The wiring harness from you 86 is stand alone with the computor. No cutting you original trucks harness and only have to remove certain EFI wires. Some things to concider. You'll need two fuel pumps. At least 3 relays wired in, two fuel pump relays, and ECM relay. You need to study fordfuelinjection.com. This site will be your guild to wiring. A plus from my EFI swap was Winter drive ability, and fuel milage.

Re: EFI Bump
back to the efi i remember reading posts about converting to efi here on several occasions, one name that pops to mind is average250, i think hes done a few 4.9L efi swaps, he would probably be the man to go to.

Re: EFI Bump
Done a few I thought 87/88 was the switchover to EFI in trucks? Seen a lot of carbed '87 trucks so just wondering what EFI came under the hood of an 86? Is the 86 302 a roller motor?
You might get 20. I've always had horrible mileage from truck 302's and couldn't tolerate the power. I have yet to do a 300 EFI swap that doesn't average better than 20 though. Some have great things to say about 302's, you might end up real happy with it.

i had an '86 F150 with a efi 5.0 aod and 3.50 gear it weighed right at 4000 lbs and got about 15-16 mpg im sure u could get better than that since u wont be running the smog pump and cats and all that junk
dont quote me on it but i think in trucks 86 was first year for 5.0 efi the 351s got it in 87 or 88 idk about the 300s

Re: EFI Bump
ok clarifications in order first comment I'm not 100% sure of because I read it somewhere online and aint to sure about it But anyway supposedly in 85 you could optionally get a 302/5.0L with EFI but I'm not sure about the validity of that statement since it wasn't based on my research. in 86 it became standard on the 302/5.0L while the 300 351 and 460 remained carbureted. in 87 the 300/4.9L came with EFI Standard. in 88 Ford got around to the 351W/5.8L and 460/7.5L and they too came with EFI standard

Re: EFI Bump
The Donor vehicle was Manufactured in 7/85. All of the wiring diagrams in the manuals, on All-Data and any other source I could find show this truck as Carbed.
The only diagram that matched, (components) was an 86 pickup. None of the colors matched (wire colors) in the diagrams. I wound up taping diagrams from a 85 carbed pickup an 86 EFI pickup and an 86 EFI mustang to the wall next to where I built the harness and once I figured out how each component needed to be wired to the others I commenced to cutting.
I believe that this truck was carbed in early 85 and when they got the intake ready for the 86 they integrated it into the 85 with some morphodite harness that they cobbed together to make it work.
Haynes and Chilton apparently merged so the diagrams in each are the same.
Yes the wiring for the motor is stand alone but you have 4 circuits to blend and a couple more for signals to the EEC.
I already installed 2 fuel pumps, the high pressure one I hard lined in the engine bay on the driver fender well. The return line was kind of tricky. I ran it into the filler neck.
The best thing about the swap is a 302 was available in 72 and with the exception of reversing the tranny cross member (Had a 427 and c-6 in it)(3 inches longer) and installing 302 perches, it was a plug and play swap.
It did require a combo yoke on the tail of the drive shaft as the 72 had 3.25" yokes and the 85 has 3.5 yokes. The distance to the carrier bearing was perfect to allow the front driveshaft to just bolt right up.
The part I was the most worried about turned out to be a no brainer. The trans linkage. On an 85 it has a lever hooked to a cross shaft from the frame to the shift lever. I saved the mechanism just in case but didn't need it as the linkage from the 72 drooped right in the grommet. Didn't even require adjusting. The kickdown is cable so no worry there. Only problem is with over drive my shift indicator doesn't line up in drive. Awww Shucks.
As for fuel milage, he (my brother) got over 22 mpg on the highway with the 85 and he never had it running right. Before I yanked it I went through it and had it purring before I pulled it just to give me a good baseline. I would be pleased as a pig in sh*t if I approached 20 with my 72. as for power I use this primarily to tow my boat and get firewood. We downsized from a 28' boat to a 22' last year. (kids are grown) I borrowed his 85 (donor) to pull my 28' about 6 years ago and pulled my old boat 350- 400 miles all the while around 80 mph so I know this motor will pull the smaller boat fine.

Re: EFI Bump
The 302 took its first breaths in the 72 night before last. It fired right up (After I figured out why I was getting constant 12v at the module on the crank signal pin) (The crank signal wire cripples up with the hot lead at the connector going down to the trans for the neutral switch) cut the wire and, "putt putt putt! It ran great. Just a little loud as I had no exhaust south of the manifold.
The only other problems I have had thus far is a small drip in the fuel return line. I used 1/4 brake line and had one of the unions kinked a little. Straightened it out. That and I have 3/8 line on my aux trans cooler and 5/16 from the tranny. A small drip. I put 4 hose clamps side by side and cranked them down. Hopefully that will solve that.
I hope to have it back as a daily driver next week. Already my youngest daughter thinks she should get to drive it back and forth to school.

Re: EFI Bump
The new heart and soul of the tow beast. Took it for a spin today and it runs great. I will report on my (hopefully) dramatic improvement in gas mileage. Cant get it into the muffler shop to have the downpipes connected to the duals till Tuesday. Too loud to drive for now.
I could definitely notice the more than 25% decrease in Cubic Inches.!!

looks like it fits like a glove, i hope you have an egr delete, if not just plug in the sensor otherwise i think it closes the loop and goes into limp mode
