I'm sure its been done... 5.4 in a bump. how hard?
My wife wants a new suv so insted of trading our 99 expedition 5.4 w/ 200k I could pull the parts I need and scrap the rest. I would think the trade in value is to low to worry about. So why not rebuild it throw on some hp goodies and put it in a bump. Anyone here done it? If so how did it turn out?

Difficulty is relative, but this sounds like a pretty in depth project to me. Also I would think you might be the first to consider this swap bucause most of us bump lovers also love the older powerplants too.
Next issue I think of in the swap is transmission. Auto tranny is much more difficult to put in the manual. You will need to consider the electronic controls for the auto tranny and so on.
The motor its self I think wouldn't be too difficult. But with it and all of the electronics, you will need to bring electronic guages and controls. Example is I believe the 5.4 motor is electronic and would need some fabrication.
That's the big stuff I can think of now. Good luck on your swap if you decide to do it!

yea it's out of the ? for me right now time & $$$. I just thought I'd throw it out there and see what you thought. I could pull the parts I need prep them for storage and trip over them the next ten years before I throw them out It probley isn't the best donor anyway w/ all the miles.

Don't swap a modular engine. Just not that great for power or economy. Sell the truck for what you can get out of it and swap in a roller 351W converted to sequential MAF injection. You can run a built up AOD if you want an auto without any wiring complications or run a M5R2 5 speed from a truck or T-5 from a mustang (as long as you keep power down with the T-5).
A hot 351 will do much better than a 5.4 and cost much less and be simpler. The mod motors have a lot of complexity to them. Probably not a swap for the faint of heart.

Over at (the evil empire) FTE on the 1961-1967 F100 forum on page 21there is a thread called "4.6L Mod motor swap has begun".
It is a pretty easy swap to to follow, 6 pages is all, he describes his successes and failures. Lots of pics on his profile to I believe. Take a look it makes me interested and thinking I might be able to do one. Basic fab skills but a lot of patience with wiring, something I do not have.

If you decide to do this (which I think is a great idea), don't sell or dismantle the Expedition, keep it driving.
You would not believe how incredibly complicated it gets with everything all ready torn apart. It's much easier to park the Expedition, get the shop manuals for it, research the swap, and then take items from it, and install them in the truck. When you are all done, and the truck has been running for a few months, then *think* about selling/scrapping what's left of the Expedition.
So many little things get missed, especially electrical components like relays, connectors, OBDII stuff.
Drop a twin screw blower on the Expedition and get all the bugs worked out. Then start the swap. Now that would be a cool swap!
