front recovery point

what is the best place to attach a recovery strap when pulling or being pulled from the front?

Aound the engine crossmember if you have a stock front bumper. The axle works too, but you can mess up your tie rod. If you slam it real hard with a chain you can bend the front crossmember up on a highboy though.

i kind of wanted to avoid the cross member, and the axle is out of the question. just curious what people have been using

onmy 2wd i used to wrap the chain around the front frame rail behind the core supprt. but the chain would get stuck under the core support so i stopped doing that. since then i have avoided getting stuck. but i have use the engine crossmember. but not very much because of the front brake lines running behind it.

I've done some pretty serious tugging with the highboy engine crossmembers. They're about the only part beside the axle you can wrap a chain around and really slam hard without tweaking anything. You'll bend the front crossmember pretty easily if you hook there, hard to find one that isn't screwed up already though.

I usually go right to the frame. I use one strap to go around both frame rails, then to the center where I clevise the two ends to a second strap or come-along hook.

I like to weld a tow hook on the frame horn. You have to be careful about using a loop between the two framerails, it puts on a lot of squeeze, tends to pull the two rails together really hard.

I've never had a problem. I put it right behind the very front xmember.

x2 with the x-member in the very front. Got yank up over a rock ledge by 2 jeeps from that attchment point. (man I hated admitting that)

the one time i got pulled out by the front i used a hook from my chain the kind with the two tabs with holes in them any way i put it on the rail where there was a hole and put the pin through it worked good untill i needed hook back but i never really get pulled from the front usually from the back bumper so i welded it on

On a previous dentside I owned I bolted a tow hook to the underside of the frame rail. I have also seen people weld a large chain hook to the frame rail for an attachement point. Should be able to get one of the painted tow hooks for less than $20.
