The springs are the same. 6" lowboy springs ARE 4" highboy springs. If a spring shop says different don't buy from them, they're retarded.

Mike, I just pulled over 21,000 pounds of scrap steel down the highway at 70 MPH today with the bone stock 4BT in my 71. Before you go dumping loads of money on upgrade parts just get the thing together and drive it. It takes 30 minutes in the truck to upgrade turbine housings.

Ok thanks Dustin.
So the 6" lift will give me a true 6" of lift?
As far as the exhaust housing goes. I will wait and see how it runs before doing to much.

The 78-79 lowboy trucks sit 2" lower than the earlier highboy trucks to start with, the springs are reverse arch like chevy and dodge. Yes, 6" springs give 6" of lift over lowboy springs. They only give 4" on a highboy. They are the same springs and give the exact same acutal lift to both trucks. It's just relative to where the truck sat with stock springs that's all.

Cool I really only wanted a 4" lift on the highboy anyways so that will work out just right. I plan on running 35's. Not sure what rear gears yet. I need to find where the sweet spot is for the 6bt and 65 to 75 mph down the freeway.
Thanks for all your help.
I am still a long ways off to finish. I still have a lot of high dollar items to buy. Hopefully next year at this time it will be on the road!!

3.55 gears will work well with the diesel ZF 5 speed and 35" tires. 3.73's will work well too if you tow a lot.

Auto trucks often got 3.55 gears. Some 4 speeds had them too, but not as common (only seen one 3.55 geared 4 speed 70's F-250 4x4)

Dustin will be putting the 3g alternator on the 6bt. Where would I get the ford brackets to mount it? Crewcab59 be my best bet?

What's a 3g alternator? There are several different ways to mount a Ford alternator to a cummins. The easiest is to just use the dodge brackets. With a sawzall and some filing the ford alt fits the same as the dodge one, just swap on the dodge pulley.

Here is the 3g and the Dodge alt for comparison and the mount on the engine.

Just cut it down to fit in the dodge bracket.
