TRANFER CASE QUESTIONS

Post by Zukinut »

In my quest for parts to do my 4wd swap, im probably gonna buy a complete truck and part it out.

So, which trucks came with the NP205 both divorced and married. Im needing to buy a F250 so i can get the leaf spring brackets, etc. I would prefer a divorced tcase so that the diesel swap will be easier.

I apologize for all the dumb questions, if there is a link somewhere that explains all this or a book, please let me know and Ill do my own reading. I havent had much luck finding definitive info. Ive found a bunch of heresay, but no facts.

Thanks in advance,
Will

What makes you think a divorced case will be easier?

I think you will find that the mated case is easier, and the creation of the divorced case crossmemember is going to be 'Un-fun'.

As for the years.... Ford: 73-77.5 were divorced 77.5-79 were mated in the F250. I do not know what the F150 used for a Tcase.

Since you are looking at putting a Cummins and a NV4500 in this truck, I would look at an end-to-end dodge solution... parts compaibility may be easier to deal with...

Divorced means I can run whatever trans I want. I may make It 4wd before I do the cummins, etc. making mounts is easy. Buying adapters is no fun. Ive thought about all dodge but I really think I'm gonna go nv 6 spd. Divorced just makes options easier.

Not exactly.

Divorced complicates things depending on your overall plan. Not much room for a driveline. Short drivelines make for radical changes in U-joint angles when things move around. Not a good situation for an engine with plenty of torque.

A stockish 160 motor with a short 5 speed like the NV4500 or Gutbag will work reasonably well for a driver, but a little more power and towing anything will annihilation U-joints.

A properly thought out mated setup is better than a divorced 205 setup.

I make female 29 spline 205 input shafts to bolt a Ford 205 to any 4x4 Chrysler stickshift.
