Automatic to manual steering column conversion

Post by dtcohen »

Hi All,

My truck currently has a 351w and a c6 automatic transmission. Originally it was a 360fe and a 3spd manual. I would like to go back to that setup at some point. My truck also has power steering that was added by a previous owner. The truck has the correct power steering (short) steering column, but it is an automatic column. Given that the 3spd power steering columns are pretty tough to find I was wondering if it would be possible to convert the Automatic column to a manual column. I should be able to find a manual steering 3spd column pretty easy to use as a doner.

Anything is possible if you have the tools/resources and skills. There's an article in the tech section about shortening your manual column to accomodate P/S. http://www.fordification.com/tech/steering-column.htm. I suppose you can use it as a guide to reverse engineer virtually any scenario. Cut the top 12" and the bottom 12" off the manual column and graft in the appropriate length center section from the automatic column? The center sections, housing, shift tube and steering shaft are all the same. The only thing that changes is the length and the top/bottom configurations related to steering/transmission configurations.
