newer engine swap (Expedition)?

Post by Zorm »

has anyone toyed with the idea of a drivetrain out of say a wrecked Ford Expedition, 5.4L with the 6 speed automatic?
1971 F250 Camper Special, family owned since 1972
1983 Cherokee, last of the big ones, bought in Italy, family owned since 1998
1965 Corvair Corsa Convertible, 140 engine, 4 speed.

I'm pretty sure I'd seen this over on the "Fixem your way" or "bumpside" Fakebook group.

Just like how airboats have evolved using the same fuel injected engines I see the hardest and most expensive, (to which my new airboat plans include) is the ENGINE MANAGEMENT or EOC required to control fuel/spark mixture.
There's guys running fuel injected Eotech engines in the airboat world I'm following that have every single control mounted that the engines had in the vehicle, (ethanol sensors/O2 sensors/etc) that to me is just overkill!
It's an old Navy saying to: KISS

I've seen a lot of 4.6L Crown Vic swaps, and one Coyote, but never a 5.4.

I'd like to take the 3.5L out of a '16 F150 and put it in a Bump though. Love that engine/trans.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

There's a guy on the "fixem your way" FB group that's running one in his bump on road courses, (he has "A--1" can't remember the correct name custom linked suspension) in the Atlanta area.

Find him and you'll find ANY answer to cramming the 3.5 as he also tunes/does his own engine management.

enough money & time, yeah it can be done. I like the thought of the 6 speed in my 1997 4.6l Tbird. That 4.17 first gear ratio allows a much higher rear gear (lower numerically like 3.08) and still have 1.17 in 4th gear means cruising on highway don't require high RPM. That 6r80 is a sure enough a man as it can handle 1000 HP & 700 Ft-Lb Torque. The control is the hard part. I just paid for a how to guide from Shrader Racing who figured it out the hard way. They made the swap in a 1999 mustang and are almost running 8 second 1320. Very impressive but I just read thru the details and it can be done but you really need to want to because of the wiring adaptions. MIght be easier to get the whole engine, harness and 6 speed out of a 2011-2015 F150 with that trans.and have at it.
68 Ranger. 302 Clevor w/ 3 on tree, soon to have front disc brakes.
