starter shorting

Just put a new battery in the ‘69 F100 and when connecting the cables the engine tried to start. First time this ever happened. Solenoid short? Somewhere else short?

Once the solenoid gets "cycled" using low voltage or long cranking cycles, (below 12 volts) I've seen many of them weld the contacts inside creating the direct short you're seeing here. The solenoid is always a good part to keep a spare in the glove box too.

In a pinch you can tap it with a tool.
sometimes it'll release.

Any recommendations on a solenoid brand to buy/not buy—or does it matter much?

About the only place I get electrical stuff like that anymore is NAPA........I have had such bad luck with that kind of stuff from places like Advance, O'Reilly's, Auto Zone etc that I won't even bother with it anymore........NOS is the best if you can find it and don't mind paying a premium price......

I have a NAPA solenoid in my truck and it seems to work fine, but I only recently installed it. I’m planning on tracking down a NOS one to swap in, and then keep the NAPA one in the glovebox.

Thanks- will visit NAPA for solenoid. Also wondering what is the 3-prong gizmo mounted next to the solenoid. Did not find it on one wiring diagram, but still without a shop manual for this truck for such.

Without a picture , you might see the horn relay.?

Yep....that's the horn relay......if you want to double check just unplug it and see if the horn blows......

That makes sense, thanks. Photo was too large for download. I’ll clean the dirty contacts on it and re-mount. Solenoid and shop manual are next.
