Hello all!
After I finally got the timing set on my new distributor, I had my local mechanic double check my work... he then pointed out that my carburetor wasn’t hooked up properly. The choke screw was cranked all the way out and it appears someone took the choke can off the carb at some point and tried to negate that by taking the warming line off completely... anyway, I’m thinking about buying a new carburetor that would be aftermarket and possibly a bit more modern, considering the engine distributor and all other parts are virtually new. Any suggestions?
One guy said that for $400.00 he could put a new one in and it would be more powerful and responsive. It was either a Holley or Edlebrock..
What say y’all?

cough****sniper**** cough

In all seriousness go with a Holley, I’m not sure E-Brock even makes a 2 barrel.

You’ll need the ford trans hardware kit too.

Re: New carburetor
Keep it simple and back to basics. Autolite 2100. http://www.guaranteedcarburetors.com. Call 'em up and ask for Larry or Butch and tell them your make/model/engine of your truck. I've bought 3 carbs from them and all 3 have been bolt on and go. Have them add an electric choke while you're at it. $200 complete. Lifetime warranty and a great bunch of guys. I bought a 1 bbl Holley for a slant 6 from them. Pulled the engine a month later and forgot to remove the throttle cable. Bent the throttle out 90 degrees! Tried to bend it back and it cracked. Called them up and asked them for a repair quote. Larry said "Let me give you an RMA number and you can send it back. We'll fix it under warranty." I said "What?! You'll warranty it for my own stupidity?" He laughed and said "Yes sir, we sure will." They shipped me another one with a return label for my old one for free. I won't buy a carb anywhere else now.

Re: New carburetor
I really like that Holley also.... just have the feeling it will be like my plug and play distributor..... it aint….
brings up a question about the kickdown linkage. My rod is disconnected and I have had it on, but have never been able to make it work, so I just removed it. is there something I'm missing? I still have the rod and it hasnt been bent up or abused just hanging out in my garage... it has been about five years since I have messed with it, but isnt there a cone shaped thingy that it hooks to on the side of the tranny?

Re: New carburetor
That Holley should be about as close to a bolt on as it gets short of a direct replacement.
It has a Ford kick down lever, but you will need a hardware kit to make it work, it includes a spring, bracket and special screw.

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_sy ... arts/20-91
The instructions linked on that page should explain the carburetor side set up.
You should have a lever on the transmission as shown in this thread:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 23#p746823
Mine looks like johnny55’s, the levers in sargents post are oriented differently than mine. I don’t recall anything cone shaped.
Once everything is reinstalled and assuming the lever on the trans is hooked up internally it should just be a matter of adjusting the special screw. Note that the large head is what contacts the pad on the throttle so it goes in what might seem backwards.
If your truck is stock then the 350CFM Holley will probably be plenty.
Though if sargents has a good source for a stock rebuild that would be fine too, I problem with rebuilt carbs is most of them are junk...

Re: New carburetor
Now I'm seriously considering the new carburetor....
I cant seem to get it through my head how that electric choke hooks up?
can someone give me an idea what is involved with hooking it up and to what it would be hooked to?
ive only ever had experience with the pull lever in the dash and the setup I have now that relies on heated pipes and a dial to pre set it. and a screw...
if im dumping 400 buck id like to fully use all functions.

Give Guaranteed Carburetors a call. http://www.guaranteedcarburetors.com. Tell them your about your truck and they'll get it right. Tell them you want the electric choke and auto tranny kickdown and they'll build it to fit. Reasonable pricing, lifetime warranty and great customer service. I've bought 2 Autolite 2100's and a Holley 1940 from them for 3 different vehicles over the past 10 years. All 3 have been plug 'n play.
