'79 F100 5.0/C6 install

Post by Heirloom »

Hi all. It's rather late in this project and I don't have any pictures from early on, but I thought I would share anyhow. Sorry it's not a 67-72. But it is a Ford truck!

This is only one of the projects I have going on. It is my Uncle's 79 F100 stepside. Factory California truck with a 302, C6 and 3.25 gears. Dealer installed A/C. The motor was getting tired, vacuum leaks were the norm rather than exception. But the real problem was the tranny. Typical morning sickness that was eventually driven into the dirt.

I took the engine/tranny combo out and set to work on the trans. The clutch friction disks were worn down to heat warped tin. The steels were destroyed. Broken clutch pack springs....it was a mess. After cleaning and inspecting everything I reassembled it with 5 disks rather than 4 in the forward pack. Spare parts from a cracked housing FE C6 helped out here and there.

About the motor. Several years ago my Uncle acquired a 90 GT 5.0 motor that was rebuilt at a local trusted shop, by a trusted friend. Fully forged bottom and complete roller top. It was covered in a shed for a while, then they moved. It sat outside for a couple years, got water inside it and became a re-rebuild. It wasn't a total loss. Everything but the oil pump was reusable, except for gaskets obviously. I did a quick hone on the cylinders and they were fine. Everything got cleaned, checked and reinstalled. All the 79 stuff went back on after cleaning and painting. I stuck a reman distributor in it, rebuilt the Motorcraft 2150 carb and matched the exhaust ports, gaskets and manifolds. It should be a nice healthy package.

Before anyone gets worried...

Flywheel and balancer are 50oz
Yes, the dist has a steel gear to go with the hyd roller cam
I know the oil pan is a front sump and the dipstick is in the rear. The exhaust is in the way and will have to be modified so I can put the rear sump on. Until then I simply 'know' how much oil is in there. It's not going to be driven long like that.

This morning I seated the torque converter and mated the trans to the engine. Then slung that package in. I waited too long to take pictures of it in, so those will come tomorrow.
