In 1999-2000, I restored a 1971 F-100 4x4 which I took to Pigeon Forge to the F-100 Supernationals and won a best of show in stock class. This truck was about a 98 point perfect stock restoration. Too nice to drive but I learned one thing after this resto - life is way to short to not drive or enjoy them the way they were designed to be used. I sold this truck after only putting 300 careful miles on it with many lessons learned.
Through the years I have owned several Ford trucks including a '61BBW and '62 Unibody F-100's, countless (in excess of 10) 1967-1972 Bumpides and one 1976 Highboy. I admit, I am addicted to old Fords AND from a young age (while vacationing in Canada for a few weeks each summer from 1977-present) I always wanted a Merc truck. My friend Big Red also known as Mike (mk) up in Alberta, Canada kindly snagged some Merc trim parts for a 67-68 conversion back in about 2000 or so. Been sitting on the Mercury parts til the time was right to complete the cloning. My 1970 F250 is turning into that truck slowly over the next few years or so. Since my very first Ford was a 1971 F-100 - boxwood green in color, my current diamond blue '70 model (390 4V FE powered) will get the full treatment over the next few years in stages. Hoping to recreate a 1968 Mercury M-250 in Boxwood green. My boys will be driving this truck for the next few years so let's hope and pray they develop a profound respect for this old steel we all admire so much......FYI- It is working!! They had the choice of painting her candy apple red, mojave tan, boxwood green or original diamond blue. They wanted boxwood green!!
My yellow1976 Highboy (114,000 original mile and fairly unmolested) was bought in 2008 from the 2nd owner in Oregon and is sitting in my shop in a million and one pieces. The paint was very decent and to be quite honest, the dismantling started innocently enough. Once I yanked the front clip off of her to pull the motor, I decided it would not take much to blast and paint the frame.... then it turned into a completely restored chasis and running gear with new interior parts and freshening. Basically she will be 100% new minus yellow paint. Currently I am waiting on the 360 FE motor to be rebuilt in it's next life as a 390 4V, the machine shop is taking its time
