What Chians for Winter
I have 36" super swampers on my truck. Now that snow is accumulating in the Cascade mountains, I need to look into purchasing chains. Does any one have any pointers on what I should look for when purchasing tire chains to accommodate those tires?

Why do you need chains with 4wd? They should have something at your local auto part store or at least have a catalog and be able to order you whatever you need.
I run 4 chains on my 4x4 plow truck. Works good

Your post got me thinking. Chains for my 67. I'm gonna test fit some net style chains for the back tires. Details to come...

Really you have 3 options.M-39 wrote:I have 36" super swampers on my truck. Now that snow is accumulating in the Cascade mountains, I need to look into purchasing chains. Does any one have any pointers on what I should look for when purchasing tire chains to accommodate those tires?
1. Go to Les Schwabs and get a set of their el-cheapo chains. Good point, they will know what size fits, and can get it or have it. Bad point, their chains are crap for a full size truck...if you intend to drive it any distance on the chains anyway.
2. Do a little looking around to find a dealer in LacLede or Peerless chains. You will PAY $$$$ for these, but they are HEAVY duty. (If the schawbies are $90, these will be on the high side of $200-$250.)
3. Buy a set of chains for a semi with Super Singles. Jack your truck up, wrap 1 chain around your tire and cut it down so that there are only 6 or so links after it is tight. Most work, middle on cost.
I have done all three. If you go with the semi chains, and buy them from schwabs, do not tell them what you are going to do with them. They get bitchy like little girls and won't sell you things...it is bizarre.
Any more questions, drop me a PM, be glad to help.
Cheers!

When in doubt, hit the gas. It may not be the right answer, but at least it ends the suspense!!

Re: What Chians for Winter
Those look like the set I just got this year. I picked up another pair myself so I would have all 4 chained up also. Man does it ever make for a nice dig in the snow and ice/hardpack off road. I would even say better than any locker for traction.

Maybe I'm getting too much traction.
I broke a 14 bolt axle shaft and took out my detroit along with it. I wasn't even bound up, I guess the shaft was just ready to go. I thought about upgrading to an arb but the detroit is repairable.
