Tires won't spin when stuck- auto trans.

Post by jumpinjivinjoe »

I have had a couple of occasions where my wheels won't spin on my 1969 F-250.
For Example:

I was towing my 3,500# 21' flatbed trailer up a slight incline in my pasture. I could only get up to one point. Pedal to the metal; but the tires would not spin. My other trucks would have torn up the grass instead of not spinning the tires at all.

I was getting some fill dirt and got into some really loose dirt up to the axles. Once again pedal to the metal, tires would not even spin. (Had to dig it out and come-a-long it with my subaru).

I think the tires should either spin or the engine should die when I am stuck in these situations.

What could the problem be?

Thanks for help!

Yeah that could very well be true. I strongly suspect I need a new timing set put in, in fact I intend putting a new timing chain in the next couple weeks. Hopefully that helps!

I reckon the timing chain has never been replaced. I intend to change it in a couple weeks. It has all the symptoms of worn chain. I would think that the engine would have simply died if the wheels could not spin, which made me think it was a slipping trans. Hopefully a new timing set will change all the truck problems...Hopefully.

did the engine load up or did it rev and the tires not spin?
if it revved ,then your trans is weak (or you don't have enough atf in it)
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...
