West Aussie Bump rust repairs abound!

Post by Weapon_F »

Hey Guys,

so here is my recently purchased bump. :hd: i picked her up for a good price and had a good base to start with. i have started dismantling and getting into rust repairs. she came with an unknown cleveland V8 and C4 auto. i have decided to start fresh with a more common engine in aus, the 302 windsor, they are redly available and have cheap performance parts. i'm pretty sure i have the least optioned bump ever produced as you will see from the photos. no heater, no fan, no factory radio, no window washer sprayers, nothing. so i will be getting one of the vintage air aircon kits and installing my own vents in the dash as it didn't even have them!

so this is the progression so far, i can't wait to start the putting back together process so i can see the dakota digital dash flash up for the first time. i hope you enjoy my thread and don't get sick of the questions i will no doubt hammer you with in the future!

Love your choice of engine. Somebody musta' gotten fired from Ford the day your truck was built as I've never seen one without defrost vent openings!
That's not one of the plastic covers over the dash is it? :hmm:

not cover there, it's all steel! it's crazy isn't it! i'm looking at the thin chrome vents from vintage air to use on there.

Wow, that's nuts. It's so cool to see these trucks in a slightly different versions. I never would've guessed they made a truck without heat or defrost! I love the straight, clean look of the dash.

And I spend many, many hours smoothing my dash, and you get to start with a perfect, blank slate - not fair!!

So was that stereo aftermarket? Someone just cut a hole, and stuck it in along with the antenna?

I do see the truck has the extremely rare hood ornament and fog light option!

Great truck to start a project with, can't wait to see this one progress!

Uhm, before you start buying Windsor part you might want to track on down. i think you may have the 302 Windsor and 302 Cleveland mixed up. I don't believe Australia ever used Windsor. and i do know y'all have Cleveland out the butt. just something you might wanna check on.

maybe i should be more specific casey, the windsor was used in our 90's falcons, which leaves me with a younger supply of engines.

tyler, the stereo i'm pretty sure it was aftermarket, i haven't started dismantling the cabin yet. yeah that hood ornament is great isn't it.....
this is how she sits now after the weekend
Image
i have found more repair work from previous owners and some very average engine mounts that have been fabricated out of laziness to get the correct ones.....

i can't wait to get stuck into it again, any of you guys run Rancho RS5000 shocks on your bumps? i have been suggested these by my suspension place wondering if you have had any experience with them?

Hey mate looks great!

Mine is Right Hand Drive one too with the same options as yours - no dash demister holes, no in cab fan, no washer, etc...we must have only got the poverty packs over here??

Hey what are those two bracket things on the dash??

Nice engine mounts...I suspect yours may have been like mine and originally an inline 6, with a bush v8 conversion at some stage. Mine has cut sections of some RHS that falcon engine mounts have been welded to

Hey I'm thinking yours has a 4speed auto combo from the newer falcs? Or sticking with the C4??

cheers

Cool project, Neat to see more guys from outside the US.

I spent a week in Bunbury, south of Perth. Hell of a nice place, great folks, felt like a great place to call home. Saw a few bumps while I was there, but mostly diesel crew Hilux's and Holdens driving through town. You guys are lucky.

I remember one of my friends spent a day trying to track down some chew (chewing tobacco) and the reaction from everyone he asked about it was priceless "You put that sh!T in your mouth like that, what the F is wrong with you Americans?"

Wow, I currently work near Bunbury, it is nice down this way. Yeah not so many bumps getting around people go straight for the 50's models. Yeah chew just doesn't exist down in aus, I've never seen it but have wanted to try it out!

So I have ordered some bits from Dennis carpenter recently but paid near on the same for shipping as I did for parts, I know shipping can be cheaper but they use their own boxes which aren't USPS standard? So they had to use FedEx. I was wondering if LMC truck do the same, they only have phone contact no email, I want more bits but I'm not too keen on having the feeling that someone has just slipped something up the backdoor without the decency for a reach around!
Dakota digital have managed to use USPS much better shipping costs! Any ideas?
