C6 or else?

Post by Rookie65 »

I recently bought a '65 Mustang with a broken 289ci; I have switched the engine to a '92 roller 5.0 and it's working fine, but, I was told that there was C6 already installed in the car. Indeed, is not a C4 and I think is not a Cruise-o-matic. I just installed a B&M shifter, which fitted perfectly using the C6 set up, but fr my surprise, I have no 1rst gear!...there is Parking-Reverse-Neutral-Neutral-Drive-Second...I've stend 2 days repeating the set up and checked the gears manually on the transmission lever by hand and no, I just got 2 foward gears....any advice of what's going on?

If it's Mustang I'd be willing to bet it's an FMX? :hmm:
Here's the tranny ID thread as it will be good for you to know what you have:

Not real sure on the FMX but I believe both the C-4 and C-6 use the same band for 1st and reverse. So if you have reverse I'd say the band is ok to start with.
How about the fluid and filter quality, that's always a start with our "slushboxes".
Maybe someone else can chime in here with a little more knowledge on our automatic trannys to help.

I've reviewed the link-thanks!....it is not a FMX, I'm thinking that previous owner messed up something in the valve body or else, the leveler has a damage internally. I get the "clicks", but no response on what it supposed to be "drive". Other than this, it response correctly and I get 3 gear changes when running....weird

I'm comin' in late on this one, but to clear up confusion the C4 has 2 bands, one is used in 2nd gear..& there is a band for reverse........The C6 is much larger & only has 1 band , for 2nd gear...reverse in a C6 is a set of clutches, no rev band..
If you will clarify which tranny we are talking about & explain to me just how you are checking it, and what it is or is not doing..I will try to help you...........Donnie

Early C6's had the old shift pattern ("green dot"), where the second spot from the bottom is actually the 1-2-3 shift.

Like Bobby said, you may have the trans that starts out in 2nd gear if you are pulling the shifter into the 1st notch out of neutral......."OH yea, the ol' green dot" not sure that this is his problem........he seems to indicate that he has 2 neutral positions...
This trans may have marks on it where people have been touching it with 10 foot poles :yt:
