TRANSMISSION QUESTION

Post by DANIELSWAY »

I have a 1968 F100 with 240 inline. I would like to keep the original motor in the truck. I have a busted collar on the column and have to hold the lever in to drive. I am wondering if there is an easy fix for this problem. I would love to change it over to automatic if that is possible without changing motor. I love this motor gets great gas mileage. I need help with the collar problem or info on what automatic tranny I need to bolt up to this motor.

The collar should be an easy fix. Can you show us a picture of it or explain in more detail where it is broken? Donnie

Like fordman said, the shift collars for manual columns are available from a few different vendors. 3 spd or 4 spd? Power steering or not? Swap to automatic is not that difficult. I'm assuming you have a manual column shift now. To do it right, you'd need the steering column from a truck with an automatic transmission although it can be "jury rigged" with your existing column, just not advisable. There's a couple of different possibilities for a transmission. If you do have a manual tranny now, you'd need to swap the flywheel for a flex plate, also. Crossmember may work as is depending on transmission mounting. There's a number of threads here that can you give you more details and the tech pages are very comprehensive on rebuilding your existing manual column (http://www.fordification.com/tech/3spd-column_01.htm).

DANIELSWAY,
Where do you live? There may well be someone fairly close to you that can help, or that may have the parts you need.
You may wish to edit your profile to include your location.
