3 speed service

Post by 390bump »

Now that my motor is out it would be the perfect time to remove the 3 speed manual transmission for servicing. Works fine but very grimmy so I suspect leaks somewhere. My question is what should be done to the tranny? Called a local shop and they said if all it needs is a seal kit - seal kit is around $40 and labor $175... Should I have a complete overhaul done? Did not ask how much that would cost... Tranny has 60K original miles on it if that helps. Other than leaks seems to work fine without any strange sounds!

At 60k there probably nothing wrong with it besides seals which are very easy to do yourself. One worthwhile upgrade I did to mine was switch to 75/90 synthetic. It shifts better and is much quieter now.

While you have the cover off to replace the gasket, peek inside and peep out the synchros. If you're sitting in neutral, with the clutch in and you let out the clutch and you can hear the input shaft start to spin, it may be time for a front bearing. The front bearing always wears out before the rear bearing.

what is there one gasket and 4 seals? if that is right the labor sounds high. i have no idea if it would be smart to rebuild the whole trans right now. they are so light weight and easy to take out. i might not bother myself.

Thnaks for the advice. How easy to replace seals? I have rebuilt motors but never messed with transmissions! Also not sure where to buy parts. RockAuto has some seals and gaskets individually but can't tell which are for my transmission. I have the 303 RAT - rockauto has parts for Tremec 150, 160, borg warner t89f, etc... need to figure out where to buy parts and how to replace them!

sorry ther are 3 seals an two gaskets.it seems the transmission may have to be partially disassenbled to replace the o rings onthe shift rods that go into the case.

Now i remember reading that a good place for parts for these is at Bronco GraveYard:

Looks like that kit is pretty complete for an "overhaul"?

60,000 miles you should not need a complete rebuild. These trannys are tough as nails. However to replace the two o rings in shifter require a complete disassembly. Bronco graveyard didnt have kit when i did mine, but check out toms bronco parts or drivetrain.com

NAPA has the gasket set. Fel-Pro TS80108, price: $6.69

The two seals (Input shaft, output shaft) should be easy enough to find. NAPA probably has them, but I didn't really have time to look any further. They should have a number on them that any DECENT auto parts store can cross-reference.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Thanks for the responses everyone. Whatever I do to the tranny will be done right now - once its back together won't have a chance to go back and mess with it. Going back to work soon so my "free time" to play with truck is comming to an end... Its been great unemployment therapy!
