Soon to be owner! Pic Added!

Post by huskerrush »

So my teenage daughter is about to start driving, and what does she ask for? A "vintage" truck!

We live TX, but my brother-in-law in Colorado has a '71 F100 that he used to have his camper on, but has sat completely unused for the last 4 years. It will be ours, soon enough, as he is GIVING THE TRUCK TO US!!!! That's a price that is hard to beat!

I'll be making a trip up to Colorado to get the truck in a couple of weeks from now. When he went to fire it up, it turned over on the first crank, and soon had it driving all over the front range. He says it's running great, interior is in good shape, but needs some body work and paint. Daughter already has Swiss Aqua and Wimbledon White picked out!

I look forward to learning a lot from the experience here at Fordification!

Yes, great story. Welcome aboard to you and your Daughter. Our youngest Daughter, who is 34 now, has always liked Ford Trucks over cars.

Well, after flying from Houston to Colorado Springs, picked the truck up and drove it home to Texas the next two days. This things likes to run! In fact, seems to run better at 70 mph than it does at 20! Had to fix a couple of lights that weren't working and replace a hose before the trip, but the thing did just fine, all things considered, on the 980 mile trip. I'll try to figure out how to post pics, and let you guys have a look at it!

Now to get insurance, registration, and inspection in order....

Here's the to do list that I can tell so far:

to pass inspection: replace broken wheel stud, license plate lights

to improve safety: install 3 point seatbelts for driver and passenger, new brake drums and shoes, polish or replace instrument panel lens (could barely read anything when lights were required)

to help it run better: repair or new power steering pump, adjust timing and carb settings, replace exhaust with dual exhaust (currently comes off both manifolds into one muffler, then out two tailpipes), leaking transmission fluid

to make it look better: body work (this will be new for me!), paint, lots of cleaning, remove old window tint and get new

for my sanity: air conditioning (when I have $1K sitting around doing nothing)

Good looking truck. Personally I would skip the drum brakes and go salvage yarding for a disc brake setup out of a dentside. Get the arms and then after replacing the bushings the front end is prettu much rebuilt. Do lots of reading on the site, lots of good info out there.

And welcome to Fordification
