C6 rebuild ?'s

Post by mrollings53 »

I've sourced some kits and other parts to rebuild my C6 from a company called Makco Distributing. I spoke with one of their reps and double checked with him on what I would need to bring my transmission back to the day it left the factory. I also discussed what sort of performance options I can do or would be necessary just for the sake of better performance. He recommended a shift correction/improvement kit from Transgo. When I asked about adding clutches, he said it wasn't necessary because the kit I was interested in already included Borg Warner clutches. Does anyone know whether the Deluxe kit PN 36008A from them (it's available from Transtar, which BobbyFord recommended, too) includes the added clutches you would normally buy in a seperate kit. Or would I need to order A36106PK Power Pack clutch kit (also from Transtar) to get the added clutches and performance they bring.

Also, does anyone have any direct experience with this company. I know that I could get most of these parts from other places, but I'm not up for paying sales tax because I've got a Transtar distributor in my state, even though they might be able to get me the parts sooner.

Anyone have any other suggestions on what I may need or should look out for when I start this rebuild.

I dont know about adding clutches to the exsisting clutch pack. I would say its safe to assume that all the clutches you need are in the main kit. you may be able to replace the clutches with the higher performace ones but i dont think y ou can stack them on. SInce you have told the builder what you wanted id just drop it off with the parts you want and let them have at it.

c6 transmission can have either 5 or 7 friction clutches. for a heavy duty transmission. us usualy the heavy duty transmissions were used in trucks. the friction clutches are used in combination with steel clutch plates in the drum. there are two drums per transmission. the low reverse and the forward or drive drum. i speak of the clutches in the forward or drive drum. i think the rear drum has four friction clutches in it. call the guy back and ask how many friction and steel clutches come in his kit.

I believe the kit comes with the standard amount of clutches/steels. The performance clutch kits add one more clutch/steel to increase surface area for more smoother application of the motors torque. I believe I would have to call back and ask specifically like you said fordman if I really want to know. Or I could say screw it and just go with what comes in the rebuild kit and forget about using a performance set of clutches.

I would still like to know if anyone has purchased from them before. I'm pretty much buying everything but the case and any usable hard parts right now and want to be sure I'm not going to regret this later on.

Thanks for the replies.

I have used them before. They are good prople. I would also order a set of selective snap rings.

What are these selective snap rings. I placed the order last night and may be able to give them a call and have it added. Do you think they are included in the deluxe rebuild kit?

The selective snap rings are for the clutch drums. They come in different thicknesses to be able to get the correct clearance in the clutch packs. In the rebuild book, it will give tolerances for each clutch pack, which is measured via a feeler gauge between the selective snap ring and the pressure plate.
