Hello,
Here is the trouble: 360/Borg-Warner t-18 with a worn speedo gear. From what I have learned, the gear box has to be pulled to replace the gear. I really do not want to pull it out at this time, the truck drives fine as it is. Do I have any other options to get a working speedometer? I am also wondering how a metal speedo gear can get worn like that, with a nylon gear on the speedo cable. Thanks for any help.

Re: speedo alternative
You sure its the gear in the trans. Have you tried to spin the gear on the cable to see if the cable will spin with the gear and if so look while spinning it to see if speedo is moving. If not you may have a break in cable.

Re: speedo alternative
i thought the speedo gear went into the rear housing. but i have only seen one T18 before. and cant remember anything about it. other than how the shifter comes out and where the reverse switch is at.

Re: speedo alternative
I think the one that is on the cable end is the driven gear, it comes out the side of the tranny. The drive gear is on the output shaft and you have to take the tailshaft housing off to get to it. This is what I have been told anyway.
I had replaced the cable and the driven gear already. The drive gear feels "cupped" when you run your finger across it, but it also feels like metal. I really can't get a look at it so i don't know what it is made of. If the drive gear is metal and the
driven (cable) gear is nylon, how did it wear down? My original thought was maybe an electronic/mechanical speedo adapter could be used, but after looking around the web , I have found nothing for manual tranny's.

Re: speedo alternative
its probably made of pot metal of some sort and can wear with lack of oil.

Re: speedo alternative
Not sure about the gear inside the tranny being the problem, but if you can't find an answer try talking to these people: http://www.novak-adapt.com/contact/contact.htm
They know pretty much everything there is to know about the T18.

Re: speedo alternative
Thanks for the info 390nut. What I have found is that the drive gear in the t-18 tranny is nylon. I have found info indicating that this gear can be replaced without pulling the gear box. I will update this post when done.
thanks guys.
