c6, output won't spin

Post by 1971ford »

Finally got the 429 and c6 mated and bolted into the race truck. C6 is a fully built race tranny with only about 40 miles on full rebuild.
After putting it in i noticed a couple of the pan bolts were threaded out a little like maybe someone just had the pan off, maybe i should pull the pan and make sure everythings in there...
But anyways,
There is no driveshaft made for the truck yet but i was trying to turn the output flange with my hand and it wouldn't turn, I tried shifting it through every gear by just moving the arm on the tranny (art carr shifter not hooked up yet) and i couldn't turn the output in any gear.

I'm just worried something's wrong. Shouldn't I be able to spin the output (driveshaft) in pretty much every gear (just not park)? Or is there just too much friction that i can't turn it with my bare hands.

It should turn relatively easy in one direction. Does it move at all? Can you feel it tick back and forth like the parking pawl is not disengaging?

I can't turn it at all. Won't turn either way and doesn't even move the slightest bit to hit the parking pin.
I'll screw with it more today, maybe drop the pan

Really bugs me. Tranny is fully built and worth more than the rest of the truck i'm sure so if it has to have work done then there goes me racing next season. Hmmm

Pull the pan and make sure the internal linkage is working correctly.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I think we figured it out. Tranny has sat for a couple years and i guess things just tightened up. dad put a prybar in the flange and it turned with just a bit more force than trying to turn it with our bare hands.
With every turn it got easier and easier, its easy to turn now. Seals got tight i suppose from sitting. I hope the seals didn't go bad though. We'll see soon enough. I think it's good to go.

Good deal, glad you didn't have to tear into it.

Seals in an automatic won't make it get tight, but rust and/or corrosion on the clutches will.
