What's involved, Manual to Auto transmission swap.

Post by panski »

Planning on installing an auto-transmission (likely a C6) to my '70 F100, SWB. My first project truck and being a novice, too. Need to order from USA, so can't afford any mistake. Hoping you can enlighten me on the subject and fill me in with as much details as you can. Please, fire away :)

you will need a flex plate and a radiator that has the transmission cooling tank.maybe a new drive shaft.and if you are going to run it on the column then you will need a automatic steering column :2cents:

panski,
Just completed mine a few months ago. Documented it in my build here:

You'll have to scroll through the thread to find more on the C-6 though.
A word of caution....the C-6 is very tight going into our trucks! The firewall to C-6 bellhousing clearance winds up being around 1-2 inches (not sure metric equivalent).

:yt: and if usign the column shift you will want the shift rod from the column to the transmission as well you will want need a kick down rod and the correct automatic transmission carb to hook up the kickdown rod or cable. the column will have to have the neutral safety switch on it.

What engine do you have? The c6 has different bellhousing for the engine families. If you have fe engine you need one for fe,240, 300, 302 351w or 351 cleveland you need windsor family, 351m 400 429, 460 you need big block pattern.
