I have read the bump wiki and looked around online..I still have questions that I don't know the answers to.
-will a aod off of an older 302 bolt to my 240?
-what flexplate would I need?
-would I have trouble with the kick down/pressure linkage that came from the 302 carburetor?
-would I need to change the length of my driveshaft?
My truck is a 69 F-100 with that came from the factory with the 240/c4 combo. It does pretty well with the gears that it has right now on the interstate, but I would still like to get my rpms lower at 70 mph. My c4 is junk so Im considering an aod if possible. Are there any other transmission options that would help me to accomplish lower interstate rpms if the aod conversion on my 240 is impossible?

other possiblities is to change your rear end gear ratios. but that may only change your rpm driving speed and not engine rpm.englertstephen wrote:I have read the bump wiki and looked around online..I still have questions that I don't know the answers to.
-will a aod off of an older 302 bolt to my 240?yes it is the same bell pattern
-what flexplate would I need?
-would I have trouble with the kick down/pressure linkage that came from the 302 carburetor?the aod uses a cable for the kick down and has to be set just so.
-would I need to change the length of my driveshaft?probably also it may need a new end on it. because of the difference in slip yoke aod and the c4 unless the c4 has the slip yoke on it.

thank you fordman. That clears up some important questions. Im not sure what the gear ratio is in my truck, but I know it isn't low geared. I need to look at the build sheet for it. I guess since I now know it will bolt up to my engine, I need to find the correct flexplate and find a dependable way to mount the kickdown rod or cable.

Re: c4 to aod swap on a 240 straight 6
I just recently swapped my c6 to aod, and I had to shorten my driveline but only because when I switched from a v8 to straight 6 I put my short v8 tail shaft onto the straight 6 c6 so that I wouldnt have to shorten my driveline. The AOD had a longer shaft if that helps makes sense.
Looking at this photo you shouldnt have to shorten your shaft at all, or even move trans mounts much if any.
The flex plate is specific to the aod so you need one from a parts house that goes to a 300 that came with an aod, I got mine from napa and asked for the flex plate to an 85 f150 with a 300 and aod, and it works great. If that flex plate has the same number of teeth you can use the same starter. Also since my 300 has a 4v carburetor I just got some linkage correctors from summit and it works great with the stock throttle valve cable. If you are using a 1 barrel carb then you may have to look for linkage from a pre 86 300 in a pickup with aod.
Also keep in mind that all aod's arent created equal, they made them from 1980-93. Pre 1988 models have no rear shaft oiling and that causes damage.
AOD was also put in cars trucks and vans, behind v6, v8 and inline 6 engines. So the AOD from the v6 car will not have as strong of parts as a v8 car or truck transmission. there are 3 overdrive servos that ford made also, v6 cars got the c servo, v8 cars like mustang and mustang gt got b sevo, and the thunderbird super coupe and 92 and 93 trucks got the strongest A servo.
AODs from 92 and 93 trucks also have Wide ratio gearset, and the 2 inch od band whereas all other aods have the 1.5 inch od band and standard gear ratio. So if at all possible find one from a 2 wheel drive f150 from 1992 or 1993, for the best AOD without having to pay to upgrade a lesser aod.
Hope that helps some.

Re: c4 to aod swap on a 240 straight 6
Alright lets make sure I have this correct.
92-93 ford truck with 300 six and aod is what Im looking to rob the transmission out of.
I need a flexplate from an 85 ford truck with a 300 six.
I need to look for the kickdown cable off of a pre 86 truck with a carbureted straight 6 and aod.
One last question. Did they make different c4s? because my transmission doesn't have the slip yoke. It has a bolt on yoke and my drive shaft actually moves back and forth. My c4 is way shorter than the one pictured above.

I should correct what I said before in that it should be pre 87, that was the first year of efi. 86 would be carbureted.
Also, in 92 and 93 the 300 only came with c6 and e4od as automatic transmission options. So you will need to look for a truck with a 5.0 The door plate will have a T code to indicate that its an aod truck, and the shift pattern will be P-R-N-OD-D-1. If the truck has a c6 or E4OD it will have a shift pattern with P-R-N-D-2-1 and if its an e4od it will have a dash mount od button.
