dana 70 gears no avalible.
over a year ago I was trying to find gears for my truck with a dana 70 rear with no luck. They have a offset of 5/8 which make them different than the newer 70s from what I can figure out. I was looking on randys ring and pinion tonight and noticed they have several choices now avalible and I am going to give them a call tomorrow to see If it is correct and will work with my 72 dana 70. Its not as high geared as I want but 3.54s are a lot better than 4.10s. Though some of yall might be interested for yalls f350s.

Greg,
Good info thanks! I'd dealt with randys years ago for some D44 parts, they're good folks.
Lot of difference in the D70's after 72 I found out a few months ago.

Re: dana 70 gears no avalible.
well I called randys and they said the whole page with gears is wrong. The salesman said all those years use a 1/2" offset housing and the 5/8 offset is for the newer. I cant afford to take a chance on being wrong again. If any one of yall have any info on this I would be very thankful.

Re: dana 70 gears no avalible.
Greg, Dana 60, 70, 80 carriers will offset .300"+. You can for sure take .100 off the carrier, most of the time you can safely go .180+ and you can get another .100" with the standard carrier bearings. With thin races on the bearings you can get even more offset.
There's a guy on Pirate who sells parts to put a 70 carrier and gears in a 60 housing. His instructions show exactly what has to be done to get all the carrier offset you could ever need on a dana including where to grind the housing for maximum clearance with 70 gears and max offset in a 60 housing.
I have used low speed 70/80 carriers with high speed gears this way.
I think it's a really bad idea to try removing material off the ring gear. The carrier has plenty of flange meat.
Have you considered ditching the old 23 spline 70 in favor of a more modern rear axle? Just a couple years newer and you get a bolt in axle with 35 spline shafts, thicker housing, better brakes and normal carrier offset.

Re: dana 70 gears no avalible.
dustin I have all new bearings and seals and brakes in this rear end that is the reason for trying to get some higher gears for it. If I change rear ends I will go to a ford 10.25 so I can get some highway gears. Towcat on oilburners is checking into his stash for a 3.08 gearset from a 86 or so f250. They also make 3.31s now for the 10.25 and the 10.5 ford. If I can come up with a c6 gear vendor adapter I will more than likely keep my rear end that I have now. I have about a couple of weeks worth of piddling and I should have the 7.3 going in my truck.

The 10.25's are great axles. The cab chassis axles are bolt ins for the older trucks with 34" frames and skinny springs. If you were closer I'd give you one. Sterlings grow on trees in my area.

Good to know Dustin, thanks. What years would the 10.25 have came in that would bolt right into our bumps?averagef250 on Tue Jan 18, 2011 5:28 pm

All Fords with 34" frames share the same rear spring spacing. Cab chassis F-350's through atleast 1997 are the same.

97 was the cut off year where the Sterlings went to a metric lug pattern.

Re: dana 70 gears no avalible.
I think that a 10.25 from '80-'97 will bolt in out F350s. As Dustin said, it has to be from a cab&chassis 34" wide frame truck. I had one for sale a few years ago, but scrapped it because nobody wanted it. There must be tons of them out there. I think that it would also be much easier to find some kind of locker for the 10.25 too.
