K. I have finally made a shopping list for all the goodies to do my rear brakes with. I feel I need to do the whole deal rather than just wheel cylinders now that I know it is not the huge deal I had made of it. According to my research, I need a 2 9/16 "rounded hex" deep socket for the axle lock nuts. It is available at NAPA -- 2 9/16″ rounded hex socket for axle lock nuts, NAPA Part KDS2436
as well as all the bits and pieces I need. New hub seals, the brake spoons, etc, etc... My question is: I have a 1971 f250 with the original dana 60. Is my research accurate as to size of socket, and do I need the one with little "teeth" on it or without? A pic of the right one would be absolutely awesome. Going to look over robroy's Brake refurb post yet again before I dive in. Also, Do I locktite the locknut or hub bolts or not when I put them back in? The mental image of it coming apart on the freeway is unpleasant.Thanks.
p.s. the page most helpfulk for me so far is

Re: Double-checking before I jump in
i think the teeth are for doing a 4wd front axle. when i did this work to a dana 60 a while back all i had was a hammer a screwdrier and a pair of pliers. i used the screwdriver and hammer as a chisel sort of. to turn the nuts on inside the drum. of coruse i really need to get back in there and do it again. because it was only a trailer and all i was doing was removing the brakes from the axle. i didnt even pack the bearings while i was there.

I imagine replacing the seals is a smart move while in there, so I am getting new ones. seems taking them out messes them up. thanks.

If you are just planning on doing the brakes once in a lifetime then yeah that works. But then you get that socket and things are just so much easier, faster, and better71highboy wrote:i just use a hammer and cheisel on my rear.but i guess a socket would make things a little easier
can't really tell how much you're tightening it down when you use a hammer/chissel. And it always slips.. and takes a while..
Anyways if i haven't made it obvious, I am a fan of the socket. Then again i have taken my d60 hubs apart a good 10 times now.

Re: Double-checking before I jump in
I kept my dodge caravan for years before this truck. Still have the socket for the hubs on it.
I concur. I will spend what I can get away with while I can when it comes to this large smelly beast I now have. She is befitting of my personality and I am thoroughly hooked. She is louder than most but quieter than some, bigger than most but smaller than some, grumpy in the morning beyond words and tough to talk to when she is feeling moody but she gets the job done. I am so glad I didn't give up early on. Thanks to you all. Happy new year.
