shims?

Post by soulcrushing71 »

Is it normal for a Fe to need shims on the starter?

I had my flywheel replaced and had my bell housing starter bolt holes retapped as they were no bueno anymore. The shop replaced the starter as well, and said that they had to use shims to get it right. They also said it was making crazy noises while the engine was running, and that was the reason for the shims. I thought it sounded a little odd because I had never seen a ford of this era with shims in the starter. I pick it up tomorrow so I will get to visually inspect what they have done. Do these guys sound like idiots or am I the idiot?

They're idiots. Just my :2cents: . Check the hole that indexes the starter on the motor plate for being oversized.

Something's not right. If it's all OEM grade parts and they did the repair well, no shims are needed.

"Why the shims?" is still the question and it's a question you need to ask your mechanic.

Hopefully they didn't tap the holes at an angle. That could cause problems.

The shop may be trying to cover up a not so great job. I agree with no shims should be needed.
