Question about 4R70W Transmissions

Post by fuzzier1 »

So I have a 2004 P71 CV I plan on taking apart and using the front end out of along with the engine and transmission. My question is has any of you tried this with a floor shifter? I have been looking at this for a week or so now and it looks as if B&M has a shifter only for the Mustangs. Called them up and they said you have to use some of the Mustangs cables or linkage. I also don't like the look of the Mustang shifter. Does any of you have an answer for me?

I think that with a little fab work you should be able to make something work out.

You'll have to see where park and L1 are in the throw of the lever. If memory serves on the C4 and C6 the console shift had the levers at the bottom of the tranny and the column mounts had them out the top in relation to the pivot shaft.

Figure out what you want to use for a shifter and where you are going to mount it. The old Pinto / Mustang II shifters were idiot proof and you could make a new detent plate to match your tranny.

I'm not a big fan of aftermarket cable shifter, usually they won't adjust correctly and when the cable fails you are stuck taping together a bunch of 1/4" extensions to get home (been there, done it).

Personally I'd see what you have now and figure out what you can mock up to do the job.

I would connect the trucks column shifter to the lever on the 4R70W. There are 3 gear positions on your shifter. Most modern auto's also have 3 positions plus a button for OD lockout.

If you choose the floor shifter route you can easily have high quality push-pull cables made to your specifications to fit your vehicle as you wish.

Adjustability is always important with an auto shifter system. I do much associating brand X transmission with brand Y shifter in my line of work. I avoid aftermarket floor shifters like the plague. They are overpriced and crap. If I had someone who couldn't stand an oem shifter and had to have a floor shifter I'd try to sell them on having me build a quality one from scratch instead of spending a dime on something stamped out in China.

I just went through some serious work fitting a 2wd toyota automatic steering column/shifter into a toyota 4x4 (with a cummins/automatic), but the results are great. The shifter looks and feels good, the whole setup looks like it came that way.

Thanks for the replies and I figured the same thing that I could probably get something to work but not sure. Also my stock column shifter is trashed, besides I already have a Flaming River Column for floor shifters. It looks like Lokar has some adjustable selector shfts that might be useful, I even like the shifters that they show. Has anyone owned or dealt with Lokar?
