speedometer cable gear

Post by pritch1958 »

I've read some of the past articles and was suprised at the amount of (heated) discussion on this topic. So without opening a can of worms here on gear theory, i'd like to know if a stock C6 speedogear (gear on cable end) will work in a top loader. I'm not as concerned about a correct mph reading as I am with it going together and parts not being chewed up. It feels like a tight hole before the gears even touch. The cable housing wants to stop about 3/8ths from being flush installed. These are both new parts, aftermarket Lokar cable and DK toploader. I'm thinking maybe the metal cable housing end piece may just need some massaging with some 320 grit to make the fit better.

the plastic gear is made for each cable or gear holder. so it may not fit. if the cable is the same it should fit.

Have you tried places that sell new cables? I only suggest this to see if both types use the same stock number. If the manual and auto trannies call for different stock numbers on the speedo cable, there is your answer.

Here's a pic of the speedo gear and new cable end I'm trying to install in the toploader. Maybe some of you can spot if there's a difference in length or style that i need to go to. The gear off the old C6 cable fits the new inner cable "snuggly" and clipped on and spins with no problem. The guy i just got off the phone with at the ford parts place said there were 2 style gears "long" and "short" but was no help with part numbers. :?

You can get them at your local Ford Dealer the only down is that they come in 2-packs. At least here in Canada.

If you buy any of those you might not have enough money to buy a 2 pack.
