Trans Kickdown, think this will work?

Post by Skitzo »

I have a BG Road Demon carb and It didn't have the ford linkage, so I am experimenting with possible solutions. I made an adapter for the kickdown arm to attach to the throttle and lengthened it with a piece of aluminum with a slot in it to mimic the standard kickdown linkage from the holley that was on the truck. Do you guys see any problem with why this wouldn't work? Any ideas or suggestions? The only thing I might do is nix the trapeze and go with a heim joint straight arm linkage to prevent any hang up.

Here's some pics

Totally rookie question on my part, but what does the kickdown do and where is it located?

Looks good to me. I lengthened my kickdown rod instead. Either way. I think yours looks cleaner than mine :(

Kickdown is a rod that runs from the carb linkage to the trans and actuates passing gear when you mash on the gas.

So, in his pictures it is the 90 degree rod that comes out the side of the carb and heads to the firewall?

The kickdown rod is the black rod bolted to the carb linkage, running down to the trans.

I think it looks good and should work. Let us know. Nice carb.

I think your going to need more "free" travel before the trottle hits the kick down.
Just guessing from the pick it looks like youd be at about ¼ throttle were it will accuate the kick down.
Have you had the throttle wide open with the linkage disconnected and then push the rod back to be sure you have full travel?

That looks nice but I'm just wondering, wouldn't that slot need to be longer? It looks to me like this way it would kick down almost as soon as you press the gas pedal. :hmm: Just wondering. I've been considering something similar since my holley doesn't have the Ford kickdown linkage on it. Lot us know how it works though.

Here's a pic of a holley with the kickdown.
Looks like a lot more pedal travel before the kickdown hits. :2cents:

I was thinking it might need a little more travel too. The throttle is very touchy, I barely step on the gas and it freakin wants to move. The 525 Demon is a great carb for the 302's. It does open full throttle, but it puts a little strain on the kickdown rod. I'll fix it and hopefully when I get my hesitation problem fixed I'll be able to go for a full test ride. I'll definitely keep you guys posted as to how it works out.

Heck I didn't even look at the travel or the fact that there's no actual kickdown lever (what was I thinking?).
Holley used to have a bolt-on Ford kickdown lever for carburetors not equipped for Ford kickdown but I can't find it on the Holley website. I know it exists because I have one somewhere in one of my toolboxes. It should work on the BG carb also.
Call BG or Holley...

Edelbrock makes a kit like the old Holley part.
Think it make work, or you can make it work..

I think what Holley is doing is having you change the throttle shaft.
