Clicking sound
Hello all,
I need your help in finding out what is wrong with my truck. I think it is the rear end gears. When I make a sharp turn from parked and going from forward, to reverse or visa versa, I hear a clicking sound from what I think comes from the back of the truck. I have found no loose parts back there yet. I plan to take off the Diff cover and look for metal in the oil.
I had the parking break on when I stopped as well, and it did sound like it made the noise with the turning of the back tires.
Any help would be great. Thank you all

Re: Clicking sound
one thing that does make a clicking sound when backing up and appling the brakes is the brake adjuster. what else can you say to tell us about the sound?

Re: Clicking sound
It seems that when It does make the sound, (and its not all the time) that it is when I put on the breaks and they are hard to push by the way, real stiff but thats another fix. It does not shake the truck but it is a loud sound almost like something is stuck then pops free. Where is the break ajuster at?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the rear u-joint. I thought it was the rear end at first because i had just replaced all of the u-joints. Just had a bad one out of the box.

I would pull the back drums and take a gander. You may have something broke loose.

Re: Clicking sound
the brake adjuster is on the bottom between both brake shoes. it does sound like the brake adjuster if it is only doing it with the brakes and going backwards. if it is doing it while the truck goes forward. something inside the brake drum might have came apart. i would look at the brakes first instead of inside the rear end. all vehicles use the front brakes for doing most of the braking. so if they arent workign properly then the rear brakes may br doing all the work. so that is also something to consider.

Re: Clicking sound
Thank you guys for your input, I will take a look at all that before I rip into the rear end. I plan on checking all the drums and breaks. Thanks again

Re: Clicking sound
good point about the u joint. that escaped me. check those too. that would do it when changing gears. most times it is a clunking. but not until it gets real bad. clicking would be when it first starts to get dry and worn a little.

Re: Clicking sound
Now that you said that on 2 occations, it did seem to clunk after I was in reverse and then going forward. I bet it is the u joints.

Re: Clicking sound
The bad u-joint showed up right away so i thought it was the rear end. And i had just replaced all the u-joints. Drove it like that for a month thinking "dammit, i'm going to have to look into that differential". Then the u-joint detonated going down the road , that sucked! Had to put a new u-joint in on the side of the road, that sucked some more.

Re: Clicking sound
Ok I got 2 U joints, because I am going to replace them both and at $8 each its worth doing it at the same time. I am also going to go over the rear breaks after that, take them apart and clean them up and if both of these do not fix the problem, it is time to rebuild the rear end gears.

Re: Clicking sound
If you're only paying 8 bucks each for them, it won't be long before you have to replace them again. Might not even fix it the first time.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Re: Clicking sound
That is true, but they are a good brand with grease fittings in it. I do not have the box infront of me but they were autolights I think. I greased them up pretty good and when I go to redo the rear end, I will check them out to see if they need to be replaced again. Thanks for your tip, I like having everyone's opinion on here, makes you think about what your doing.
